The Rites Of Spring Igor Stravinsky
Second Symphony Michael Tippett
Fields of Coral, from "Oceanic" by Vangelis. Trust me on this one.
Rhapsody in Blue is an incredible song...IMHO the best.
Aase's Death (from the Peer Gynt suite) by Grieg.
Adagio for Strings (Samuel Barber)
Check out Scott Tennant's recording of Joaquin Rodrigo's Invocation and Dance for solo guitar. That's a great piece.
Aint's Nothin but a G Thang by Dr. Dre.
Talking about Rhapsody in Blue - what do you think of the cartoon they did to it in Fantasia 2000? I loved the skating bit.
I would go with Canon for the greatest piece of all time. There are so many layers to it.
I would say "the battle" from the movie Gladiator.
Anyway, all tracks from Gladiator are good...
The SW music themes like the Imperial March, ANH Main Theme, and DOTF.
Lots of other JW film themes (Jaws, ET, Superman, etc).
The Planets suite.
The Hunt for Red October soundtrack.
"Montagues and Capulets" from Sergei Prokofiev's "Romeo & Juliet". It's the best.
Johann Strauss's "Blue Danube", Maurice Ravel's "Bolero" and Rossini's "William Tell Overture" (u know, from The Lone Ranger) should be considered too.
Speaking of Fantasia 2000, does anyone think that there's a part in the whale scene with Resphigi's Pines of Rome that would make a great scene in one of the next two episodes? I'm talking about where the whales come up out of the water and you see this great aerial view of them coming at you and then it pans around to behind them. I always imagined that the whales could be replaced with ships and that would look pretty neat in a Star Wars context.
Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto. That stands out for me. The second movement would make a great Ani/Padme theme.
Here's a list of some of mine (soundtracks only):
1. Binary Sunset- ANH
2. End Title- ANH
3. Main Title- Patton
4. Exile- The Insider
5. The Victor- LA Confidential
6. Duel of the Fates- TPM
I really like the Final Fantasy 6 soundtrack, especially the actual orchestral pieces (from the Grand Finale CD?).
My favorite is Chopin?s Piano Concerto No. 2, but I also agree that Rhapsody in Blue is excellent.
1. Victory Celebrations-ROTJ SE
2. Binary Sunset-ANH
3. End Theme-Gladiator
Tiny Dancer by Elton John. I always get ripped for saying that to my friends because i'm only 16 and I like oldish music. Anyone else have this problem.
Siegfried's Death and Funeral March by Wagner.
Night on Bare Mountain
I probably got that wrong.. I also like Lakmé, but that's a bit clichéd
Imperial March. Probably everybody recognizes it!
If you're going to mention Rimsky-Korsakov, I think his best piece is "Procession of the Nobles." We used to play that in band about every other year and I think it's one of the best orchestral pieces ever. It can be heard on "Fiedler's Greatest Hits" featuring the Boston Pops. It's an essential album, I suggest you pick it up. Best ever? There's too many to pick from. "Summer, Highland Falls" by Billy Joel. Listen to the accompaniment, it's definitely in the classical vein. Best episode ever.
easy--bill conti for "Going the Distance" in the original Rocky. That's the only thing that can compete with John Williams.
for star wars--duel of the fates gets better every time I hear it.
Here are some pieces I think may be the best:
[blockquote]? Launch - Trevor Rabin
? Charging Fort Wagner - James Horner
? The Rock Theme - Hans Zimmer
? Conquest of Paradise - John Williams / Vangelis
? Bare Island - Hans Zimmer[/blockquote]
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Icarus's Dream Suite by Yngwie Malmsteen
Bartok's 2nd piano concerto - its so damn meaty!
