    Ok,

With all this talk about music, the appreciation of sound, here is the one killer thing, what is the most beautiful thing you have ever heard? Whether it be a song, an instrument, a voice, or a nature sound, what do you think it is? Personally, I think the most beatiful thing I have ever heard is the voice of Cathy Cavadini. There will never be anyone with the beauty of Cathy's voice, yet she is unrecognized. If you don't believe, watch An American Tail II: Fievel goes west. There is a sequence where she sings the song "Dreams to Dream" Truly beatiful, it brought tears to my eyes.
Unfortunatly they made an extremely cheesy variant with a different singer and electric guitars for the end credits, uggh. I remember the song goes something like :

I lose my way.. no one cares.
the words I say.. no one hears.
my life, it seems, is a world of dreams.

deep in the night you'll find me.
dream and you're right behind me.
    stay.. if you will stay...
    we'll dream the night away.

    dreams to dream..
in the dark of the night.
when the world goes wrong.. I can still make it right.
I can see so far in my dreams..
I'll follow my dreams until they come true.

there is a star waiting to guide us..
shining inside us.. when we close our eyes. come with me, you will see what I mean.
there's a world.. inside.. no one else ever sees.
you will go so far in my dreams..
    somewhere in my dreams..
    your dreams will come true.

    don't let go..
if you stay close to me in my dreams tonight,
you will see what I see..
    dreams to dream..
as near as can be.. inside you and me,
    that always come true...

Its magnifacent, cathy only sings passages 3 and beyond, but its still alot better than the full end version with the different singers and guitars. John Williams may be the best overall composer of our time. But Dreams to Dream with Cathy Cavadini gets my vote as greatest piece of music ever. PERIOD!

I don't really have a favourite piece of music, but my favourite sound would have to be the sound of the cello (played by someone good of course :D).

    "Small children laughing"

Yeah right buddy, listen to the end of the Poltergiest soundtrack and you'll hear that. :p

As for me, I'd say any sound that comes from a Harp.

    :D

the fourth movement to Mahler sym #3. There are 3 movements of bombastic and violent mood swings, and then a peacful calm, followed by a soprano in a low register. He voice sounds like pure sorrow, and that soft, sedated section always hits me like a ton of bricks.

The title of this thread has an immediate connotation for me.

"The most beautiful sound I ever heard...
    [echo] Maria, Maria, Maria..."

A perfect fifth... No, a tritone! AAHH! No, not really, but had to stick that in. That's something hard to answer for me. I think I have to live a life a little more, but I do love a good angsty string piece, like out of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

'Sandcastles' from the Mummy returns is quite beautiful, but the love theme from Bravheart is even more beautiful.

Anyone know what i'm on about?

I've heard many beautiful things, so I'll name the big ones.

First time I saw Empire, in the Asteroid field with the trumpet solo. It looses its beauty with time, but it still gets my heart pumping.

Up in Baxter State Park (the most remote tract of land until Montana), I just sat in a field. That place sounds like nothing else.

This girl I work with laughed once and I almost fell on the ground. But that's rather a personal thing so ignore it. I wish I hadn't said that now.

A beautiful laugh, sounds great. I never fell like that for a laugh.

The most beautiful thing to me right now is probably a piano/cello mix.
I mean when a piano and a cello plays together it's amazing.

Silence is also high up on that list. My parents live in the country so I now silence. It's beautiful.

OK currently I love the singing that is in the river baptism scene in the movie O Brother Where Art Thou. It's just beautiful.

LMM is right though, that fanfare before a SW flick is hard to top.
