Favourites from when I fell in love with Russian culture:
    • Andrey Zvyagintsev's The Return
    • Andrei Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev
    • Mikhail Romm's Nine Days of One Year
    • Stanislav Govorukhin's Not by Bread Alone
    • if television films count, the series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson
I also love many Soviet and Russian cult films, but I thought I'd give special mention to the not-so-cult films that have a special place in my heart.

The correct answer to this thread is Rabbit Proof Fence, the most honorable of all movies.

    American film.

Yes Rogue1-and-a-half - foreign is anything not US or UK according to OP.

So Gallipoli, Rabbit Proof Fence, Proof, Romper Stomper (Crowe is such a talent in this), Lantana, the Lighthorsemen all count.

Days of Being Wild. 2046. Chungking Express. Infernal Affairs. Raise the Red Lantern.

Great thread topic. I am very interested in non-English-language films, but unfortunately, I don't see nearly as many of them as I used to when I lived in a university town some years ago and was able to go (for free!) to the weekly "Foreign Film Night" at one of the campus theaters[face_sigh].

Anyway, two of my favorites are The Lives of Others (Germany, 2006) and Cinema Paradiso (Italy, 1988). CP just may be my very favorite film in general. I know it sometimes gets criticized for its sentimentality, and I understand that criticism, but I absolutely love every frame of it! For me, it really speaks to some deep truths in the human experience--the innocence of childhood, the intensity of the experience of one's "first love," the inevitable sense of loss that is part of growing older, and the magic and power of cinema...

Also, who couldn't love little Toto?!...just look at that adorably expressive little face[face_love] :

To say nothing of the heartbreaking beauty of the amazing score by Ennio Morricone...

    Ok, I'll stop myself...(can you tell I adore this movie?:D )

I've only seen the The Lives of Others once, but it made a powerful impact on me and I plan to revisit it. Like CP, it has a very memorable and moving ending.

I look forward to seeing more recommendations in this thread and hopefully getting a chance to check out a number of them myself!

Gojira... a serious-minded monster film done right.

A beautiful, haunting score adds to its greatness.

Forgot to mention another Norwegian flick that I liked, although it's kind of trippy, which is The Bothersome Man.

Oh, wow, I really wanted to see that at one time and then somehow or other I forgot it entirely. Thanks for the reminder; I do need to check that one out. I love LaPaglia.

Also, let's not forget Leone. I like the entire "Man with No Name" trilogy. Love actually, except for maybe the first one, which is a bit lackluster. I actually prefer Few Dollars More to Fistful, which isn't the most popular opinion, I don't think. But Lee Van Cleef is great in Few Dollars More.

Anything Yimou Zhang(Raise the Red Lantern, To live, etc.) but his earliest works are the best. His spectacle films like Hero, The House of Flying Daggers and The Curse of the Golden Flower are very good too though.

    Castle in the Sky.

Someone above mentioned The Lives of Others. Awesome film.

Akira Kurosawa's Dreams. Great anthology film.
