Just downloaded The Planets... I had obviously heard it before, but never knew the title or artist... brilliant!

    Hmmm... what next to download?

    Big problem!

    I like them all!

But since Beethoven is my favourite composer, I'll put in a show of support for the 9th Symphony.

    Good show, bluebereft!
Beethoven is also my fave composer, but for a single work I voted for Blue Danube (cause of Kubrick's 'machine ballet' in his masterpiece, '2001').

It had been a wonderful evening and what I needed now, to give it the perfect ending, was a little of the Ludwig Von.

Rhapsody in Blue is good, although I also like Beethoven's 5th Symphony and that one classical piece that is played in A.I. as the car crosses the bridge to Rouge City.

Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is a masterpiece, and something that young piano players such as myself wish to someday master. ;)

A lot of good pieces to choose from... Rhapsody in Blue, Blue Danube, Beethoven's 9th.... but my favorite will always be Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.

Ode to Joy for me. The finale to Beethoven's Ninth is simply the most fantastic piece of music ever written.

A question, though: almost all the greatest composers were from a small geographical area in northern Europe: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mahler, Mendelssohn, Richard Strauss, Wagner?all of them were German. Some of my other favorites (Smetana, Holst, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Grieg) came from territories proximate to Germany. All these figures composed during a narrow historical timeframe. So this is my question, boiled down to its essentials: why is it that all the great composers are German? And furthermore, why is it that all of them worked during a tightly-defined period of two centuries of one another?

The Planets was the music that inspired John Williams to compose the Star Wars music. Besides that, it's great. I'm into all genres (except mebbe for stinky hip-hop).

Holst's The Planets. While there are some truly extraordinary pieces up there, The Planets in its entirety blows them all out of the water.
