So there's only one other person with me on the Carmina Burana huh? You know if you listen to the whole thing it's not all dark!

I love Carmina Burana, a superb piece of classical music. The darkness to it is one of the main things that attracted me too it. O Fortuna is great because it starts because it has such variety in it. It starts out very loud with the chorus, then goes to a very quiet middle, which leads up to a very loud and fast part, to the end which is very fast-moving and vivacious.

Id give it up to Miles Davis - Kind of Blue, best selling jazz album ever and just a straight out masterpiece.

    Not Classical.

    Hmmmmm, choices choices...
Hands down the winner for me is the same as YS... the adegio for strings is dispare put to music...

Other than that... The old standbys... the 9th and the moonlight sonata, (Ludwig van), the Requiem by Mozart as well as Andrew Lloyd Webber (his Pia Jesu is ALSO gorgeuos)... Carmin Burina in small doses as well as Ave maria....

These are all great pieces of music, but I had to vote for 'other', since you did not include any of those charming, enormous, never-ending symphonies of Gustav Mahler [face_love].
I have to mention Shostakowich's Sonata for cello (that's mostly because I've played it), Dido & Aeneas from Purcell and Venus & Adonis from John Blow (playing the continuo in both was an unbelievable experience), and Bartok's Piano Concerto #3 (just love it :))

After having played the Pachelbel Canon at way too many weddings, that's off my list.

I voted for Beethoven, but Mahler's 1st is my other favorite. I love playing both of those really loud in the car, with the windows open, and watching the looks I get.

Jeez, I don't think I can decide between...

    Bach's
-Jesus bleibet meine Freude (Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring)
-Orchestral Suite No.3 in D Major, BWV.1068: Air (Air On A G String)

    -Pachelbel's Kanon D-dur

    -Verdi's Requiem

And of course, Beethoven's 9th Symphony (Ode to Joy) and Für Elise.

"Little" Fugue in G Minor by Bach. OH, I love that. I even had it as one of the songs that played while people were seated at my wedding. Those four organ voices are wonderful... and it was also entertaining to watch our 5'1" organists feet fly over the pedals on our old organ!

    A few more...

    Vivaldi:

    (1) Concerto for Four Violins in B Minor, Opus 3, No. 10

My chamber orchestra played this at a state music conference- the violinists were great.

    (2) The Four Seasons,

especially "L'inverno". It has a great violin solo. When we played it in orchestra, our solo violinist was, again, superb.

    ----

"Bacchanale" from Samson and Delilah, by Saint-Saens. Played this in district Honor Orchestra. It, in my opinion, was the best of the program (and that included Beethoven's 5th).

"Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major" by Bach. I believe this was mentioned earlier, but it deserves to be mentioned more.

And of course, "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart. :D

Requiem in D Minor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Epsecially these verses:

    Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine
    Et lux perpetua luceat eis
Te decet hymnus Deus in Sion
Et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem
    Exaudi orationem meam
    Ad te omnis caro veniet
    Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine
    Et lux perpetua luceat eis

    Kyrie eleison
    Christe eleison
    Kyrie eleison

    Dies irae
    Dies illa
    Solvet Saeclum in favilla
    Teste David cum Sibylla
    Quantus tremor est futurus
    Quando judex est venturus
    Cuncta stricte discussurus

    Rex tremendae majestatis
    Qui salvandos salvas gratis
    Salve me, fons pietatis

    Confutatis maledictis
    Flammis acribus addictis
    Voca me cum benedictis
    Oro supplex et acclinis
    Cor contritum quasi cinis
    Gere curam mei finis

    Lacrimosa dies illa
    Qua resurget ex favilla
    Judicandus homo reus
    Huic ergo parce, Deus
Pie Jesu, Domine, dona eis requiem
    Amen

What? No one put the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto on the poll? Either that or the Shostakovich 5th Symphony? Augh, wonderful pieces on the poll (except for that dreadful, overused pachelbel that we violinists have to play at every wedding imaginable), but they need to be replaced by those two.
