Well, if you have a look at Australia's current leadership and the other candidate for power - We are definatly screwed!

During every generation, for thousands of years, there have been people that have been sure that "the end of the world is nigh" and they have even determined exact dates for Apocalypse/Armageddon/Ragnarök/First Alien Contact/etc., all of which have passed. Let's see, how many of them were correct? 90%? 50%? 10%? None?

I don't have a day predicted(hundreds/thousand years)-but if we don't look after things generations to come will have to deal with everything we leave behind.

Mankind kills, more than it replaces-we are the rulers on the top of the food chain, if we kill everything below us-we can't survive.

It is as simple as that.

I think there is hope over the next couple of hundred years and I hope to do something about it (through teaching), but long term, I say it's the way of A.I.

Well, Peace Thru Strength is a good thing to remember, as preached by Reagan. Unfortunately, Clinton really trashed America's prestige during his reign. Hopefully, Bush will restore America's projection of power to the world, and retake its mantle of leader of the free world.

Right now, no, the free world does not respect America. Ever since Clinton took office, the rest of the world stopped looking up to America, and started scorning it. With the good grace of God, it will be a long, LONG time before a Democrat is ever back in the White House, although I know it will happen sooner or later. I realize that there are many non-american's here, who seem to really resent the idea of a strong AMerica with a strong leader, and thus your continued support for Al Gore and Bill Clinton. Well, hopefully those days are gone.

Also, by the way, Africa's main religion IS NOT Catholicism, although it is growing. Islam is the primary religion in all of africa, without a doubt.

The world's perception of America hasn't changed much. There is a great article in the last Newsweek that atests to this. The rest of the world has always looked down upon us, culturally. That hasn't changed. If anything, the opinion of the people, not the leadership, worsened during the Clinton years. No one in any other country cared about his affair or whether he lied about it, and they laughed at the US population for being so puritanical about it.

I voted bright but on one condition:

We need a huge catastrophy that will unite this planet. Now you may choose your way of death... cataclysm, earthquakes, meteor, floods, country music...

What a powerful race we could be if we united, we are stronger by our differences, if we can all realize that someday.... the possibilites are unimaginable!

    I vote bleak.
    Country music still exists lol
If mankind doesn't get its butt into gear and start to not rely on fossil fuels, then we can hang around for a while longer. The've had the idea for the battery powered car since the 40s, yet all the corporations don't give a stuff, they just wanna sell fossil fuel powered cars, which are naturally (hehe...pun) cheaper.
Sydney has 4 million people. In a nation where you can only really live on the coast line. Sri Lanka has 19 million people. Australia has the same amount. Now that is overcrowding! (If you didn't know Sri Lanka is that small island of India)
I don't think the end is nigh at all. I think mankind will be around in a million years, regardless of what some nutter says.

KesselRunner- First off, i would NEVER take anything from NewsWeek at any value. Same with Time Magazine.

The level of contempt that other country's have for america now is easy to see in all of their dealings with us now that Clinton was in office. They liked Clinton because they looked down on Clinton. Now they have a real president, and now they don't want to look up to anymore.

Like I say, screw the euro's. Let them deal with the Serbs, and with the Russians when they get rebuild, rearm, and return to Western Europe. I am sure their left wing socialist governments will be able to disway them.

For the love of god, why are so many people pessimistic. It seems to be a growing fashion these days to be nihilistic and hate loath humanity. If we think that humanity's future is bleak, than we will achieve nothing. Innovators and scientists do not achieve because they forsee a manmade apacolypse, they did it because they believed in the future. Unless you believe in the future, you will not improve it. Go and be something for godsake, instead of stiing around pretending to be intellectual in your hypotehses about man's nature. Every day we gain more and more in technology to help us and every day valiant people struggle to improve the future. Relish in your ability to contribute.

But no. Go ahead, make prophets of yourselves.

I think perhaps many people are paranoid as all heck. Chill. Even if there is "overpopulation", its not the end of the world. Its not as if all the sudden there will be 10 billion people and everybody will die. Nuclear war is nonsense, for it is suicide. Why would a government launch a nuclear assault on another nation, when they know they will be retaliated against in the same way? Nobody is so foolish. Perhaps there will be some incidents, a few bombs here and there, but I doubt there will ever be a full scale end of the world nuclear holocaust like in the movies.

Many enviorment things are exaggerated like heck, but we need to fix it still. Global warming and what not, bla bla bla. It can be fixed. Its not going to kill everybody off. We are a long way off from making the planet uninhabitable, there is plenty of time to fix it up.

So you can all go around being paranoid at everything the rest of your lives and worrying about such and such, but it seems rather pointless. Chill out.

Nuclear war is not nonsense while there is an American president hell bent on creating a Star Wars defence system.

It is seen by practically every other country as an means to improve America's first strike capability. China and Russia are not going to like it much.

I saw a special on Antarctica on PBS a few nights ago. The Katabatic is a glacier that runs from the center of the continent to the coast. It is slowly melting. They say that the melting is not directly related to what humanity has done, but the planet's oceans have raised a total of about 3 feet in the past hundred years. That is the greatest increase recorded in over 2000 years. Non polar glaciers definitely show the human impact in their melting patterns.

You don't need very much money to press a button. Russia already has the nuclear armaments, just because they are broke now doesn't mean their missiles don't work.

On an environmental note - look at the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica. It has recently broken of the largest ever recorded iceberg -over 200km long. The Polar Caps are melting people, let's hope you don't live on a low island in the Pacific, you'll be getting wet feet soon.

It's you who's to blame for our world's downward spiral. Your parents won't do anything about it. It's up to us to get this world set straight, and teach our generations to carry on. People who vote bleak probably are to lazy to change our world. People are already helping out the world, but humans only care about bad things. Don't see many front headlines on how good someone has done. If we develop a moral system, we will do fine, and will prosper. We don't have to get along, but we have to respect each other, and be united like Entil`Zha said earlier.

Pessimist hold back a society, even if they're right. Optimism helps to have.

If an asteroid was going to hit the Earth in one year, al of you who voted bleak would just throw everything down and act like animals. Optimists, on the other hand, would find a way to survive. Doesn't mean it's possible, but what would it hurt?

Those of us who voted 'bleak' did what you should do to determine an answer. We stepped back and examined our society. Right now, I don't know who wouldn't say that our society is in a downward spiral. Therefore, if the trend continues, yes, the result will be bleak.

This does not mean we don't hope it gets better or we won't work to make it better. If anything, we will work harder to improve the situation because we can see where we are headed.

If anything, the 'bleak' voters will think there is an asteroid coming, and take measures against it. The so-called optomists would never think an asteroid was coming and would do nothing to prepare.

Only if we colonoize other planets will the earth be able to support us. We are nearing the limit now, before to long the planet will nopt be enough. We MUST expand outward, we MUST look to the stars, but people are dumb, and think why go into space? They want problems solved on earth. The thing is we must go into space to solve problems here on earth.
