I agree that it was Chewie that convinced Han to go back. We see him nagging Han in Yavin.

And since Lucas has announced that Chewie will be in Episode III, perhaps he's good friends with Obi-Wan, which is why he convinces Han to go back.

Looked to me like he was pretty well packed up. Why do you think he took so long to get to Luke? All those gold-pressed latinum bars weigh a lot!

 

He opened up the money boxes on the way to Jabba's Palace and found them filled with confetti. He was SO upset he came roaring back for revenge and actually was aiming for Luke but hit Vader instead by mistake. At that point he came up with that lame "you're all clear kid" excuse and pretended to be a hero...and well, the rest is history!
