A Heart At Fire's Center (Steven C. Smith)

A thoroughly engrossing biography of Herrmann. Reccomended.

Celebrating The Classics (conducted by Charles Gerhardt)

Released in conjunction with a series of postage stamps some years back, it has suites from:
    Fountainhead (Max Steiner)
    The Robe (Alfred Newman)
The Thing From Another World(Dimitri Tiomkin)
    The Sea Wolf (Erich Korngold)
Beneath The 12-Mile Reef (Bernard Herrmann)
    Prince Valiant (Franz Wazman)

I already had the Korngold and Herrmann tracks, but hadn't been able to find the rest of the Gerhradt albums; and it's only $5 at Screen Archives, so hey...

Michael Giacchino, Mission: Impossible III -- as WoS said, solid action score. A little busy at times, and about 15 or 20 minutes too long for a comfortable listening experience for me, but there's some fantastic action and suspense music in there. Some of the best sustained suspense since "The Desert Chase" from Raiders of the Lost Ark (and, yes, this composer still, as in Medal of Honor, sometimes sounds just a shade too much like Williams). Not a great score, but a good one that I'm not sorry to own.

Hans Zimmer, The Da Vinci Code -- Meh. It sounds like Zimmer, except when it doesn't. There are sequences that could have been ripped from Goldsmith's The Omen. There's a motif that sounds suspicially like some of Horner's STII score. There are long sequences of dullness. And then there are passages that are unquestionably Zimmer, that sound like they're ripped out of Gladiator, noble themes that are bursting with the effort of not exploding into heroic fanfares and epic battle music. There's about 15, 20 minutes of a really good score in here, padded by about an hour of who the hell cares.

+ The Promise - Klaus Badelt.

This is easily the best albmun I have by Badelt, and to be quite honest - the only one that I have enjoyed.

I just ordered it the other day after reading the MMUK review. The only Badelt I've cared for so far has been The Time Machine and bits of K-19, both from 2002; since then, the only thing he's done of note I think has been PotC, and it's questionable how much of that was actually his, and whether it was actually any good. ;) Still, really looking forward to The Promise.

The Time Machine is about the only thing by Badelt I've liked, even if the main theme is ripped straight out of Goldsmith's The Edge.

Well, it's not a soundtrack, but WOW am I excited! My parents, brother, and grandparents all chipped in to get me the 180 CD set of Mozart's complete works for my graduation gift. I don't think I'll be buying too many more soundtracks for a while.

    Amazing Stories: Anthology One
(John Williams; James Horner; Bruce Broughton; Georges Delerue; Billy Goldenberg; David Shire; Danny Elfman&Steve Bartek; Lennie Niehaus)

The Williams, Horner, and Delerue scores are the highlights here; three great scores, Delerue's The Doll being probably my favorite. Williams basically spends fifteen minutes gently playing around with a forerunner of Anakin's theme, it's quite lovely.

The rest of the scores are solid. A terrific release.
