What Nordic people think about each other?

It would be great if Finland would get back all land-areas it lost in WW2. Especially those islands in Gulf of Finland and of course city of Vyborg which guarded Finland (and Sweden) for centuries.

Sadly that's not likely to happen. And even if it did happen it would bankrupt finnish economy.

 

Maybe Karrelia would.. but the Islands we could have without bankrubt...

EDIT: And anyway, it wouldn't be *Finland* that would be bankrupt, it would be Scandinavia or what was that name now..

 

Scandinavia would not work as name for unified nordic countries because Scandinavia includes only Norway and Sweden.

 

How about if we take first three letters from each country's name? That would be Finswenordenice.

Well maybe it's not very good idea. Does anybody have any better suggestions?

 

What kind of country would it be like? a Federation? Then the best way would be to name it as Nordic Federation, or NorFed in a short form..

 

Just wondering, is Denmark in or not?
If it is we should reclaim the Schleissig-Hollstein? region from Germany. I have no clue how to spell that SH, just remember it from my German lessons. suppressing dark memories

 

What about Nordica as name?

 

Nordica is quite fine and it can be used just like that in most languages but us Finns would have to change it. It just doesn't work in finnish. If finnish person would like to say "I'm from Nordica" it would be "Olen Nordikasta" and that sounds really stupid. Finns always change foreign names to sound more finnish. For example:
Sweden = Ruotsi
Norway = Norja
Denmark = Tanska
Iceland = Islanti
Stockholm = Tukholma
Copenhagen = Kööpenhamina
Carl Gustaf = Kaarle Kustaa (or just Kalle)
So Nordica would have to be changed too. The most easiest translation would be Pohjola, which would be quite fine because it's familiar from finnish national epic Kalevala.

Another question is that what would be chosen as capital of this Nordica or whatever? If any of existing capitals would be chosen there would be lot of people who wouldn't like the choice. My suggestion would be Mariehamn because first it is not really part of any nation and second it's geographic position would be ideal. Has anybody other ideas?

Well, with each (former) country that Nordica conquers, the geometric center will move a bit which means that the capital will have to be either a) extremely portable or b) HUGE!!!

Minor problem.

It needs to be beautiful too. Have you seen the pictures of Brasilia, the capital of Brazil? The whole city is built to resemble the silhouette of an airplane when seen from above. Sweet.

 

Why would capital have to be a big city? I think that capital needs just be symbolic place where only major decisions are made. Minor problems would be solved in local administration centers i.e. current capitals.

It's said that Tolkien built Lotr on Kalevala, I don't know if you finns know anything about that. I saw it on that National Geographic documentary. Kalevala's main character or whatever is an old man with magic powers. Now, I hate comparing Lotr with other stories, but this would be Gandalf.

Ooooh, shame on you, Leto! The Kalevala is Finland?s national epic.

It was written down very late, in the 19th century, but the songs in it hark back to the stone age. It tells of Finland?s mythical past, and as all such primordial myths, it is full of powerful magic.

Tolkien ? a great admirer of things Finnish - draws on old Nordic epics in general. The Kalevala is certainly one of his sources. The two Eddas - where many names, such as Gandalf, originates - and the Beowulf Saga are others.
It may be noted that Tolkien based the Elvish language Quenya on Finnish. And it shows!

 

Ok ok, I give up QQ. Do you think one could find it in a library?
