I think we have different definitions of reboot. I think stylistically and in story telling technique the ST will bear little to no resemblance to the PT.

If Episode 7 continues the story of the OT Generation or the next which it will Episode 7 will be a continuation.

NuTrek is a reboot. The makers inserted some contrived plot points so that they can claim that it's not a reboot, but it's obvious that it is.

I kinda think remaking Network would be a good idea. They could really dig into the world of the media in new and interesting ways because of all the changes. And let's be honest; the original movie is just not that good. Somebody tell me about one scene from the movie that isn't the "mad as hell" scene. Anybody remember one? Anybody?

One of my favorite scenes in that film is when the underground SLAish leader (the name of the group escapes me for the moment) is going over contract details, distribution rights, etc. And I know Ned Beatty has a scene where he masterfully manipulates Peter Finch.

I certainly remember the finale. "This was the story of Howard Beale: the first known instance of a man who was killed because he had lousy ratings."

No, it isn't. It's an alternate timeline. ST has a long-established history of parallel universes, mirror universes, and the like; this is just another such universe "adjacent" to the original, complete with a refugee from that familiar universe. It's part of the same overall continuity as all the earlier films and episodes, featuring a character who lived through (most of) those events. The same cannot be said in the case of an actual reboot. Time travel is always contrived; its usage in STXI is no more contrived than any other of the many times it was used in ST over the years.

I'd bet you dollars to donuts that the conversation among the producers went something like this:
    "Let's reboot Star Trek!"
"The fans will revolt if we do that."
"What if we call it an alternate timeline instead of a reboot?"
"Sure, they'll accept that. Let's run with it!"
A reboot by any other name is still a reboot.

That's my favorite scene in the movie, actually. Beatty just works it like a fire and brimstone evangelist; Beale is crazy and he knows it - he's talking to Beale on his level, which is the level of blathering insanity. Great scene.

And a non-reboot by any name is still a non-reboot. X = X. It's funny how labeling things doesn't have the power to magically change their actual content.

As long as I have the original*, I don't care if a film gets rebooted or remade.

(*Or remake as is the case of John Carpenter's The Thing)

I wouldn't mind if they rebooted Lethal Weapon.

If they ever touch Die Hard though....

There's been a lot of great mob movies after The Godfather, so to reboot that would be a horrible idea...it would feel unrealistic compared to Goodfelllas or The Sopranos, nor would it have the classic film feel the originals did. Same goes for Citizen Kane, and to reboot Airplane! today would just be awlful too.

The rest of the list, while I wouldn't like it, could make a decent movie/series if redone...not talking a scene for scene remake, but taking the basic story and retelling could work.

Ya know, I'd kill for a decent spoof movie in the vein of the original Airplane!, Naked Gun, Top Secret!, or Hot Shots! Just don't put poop jokes and dated pop culture references in the damn thing.

I was getting ready to post this elsewhere, but the original was awesome you shut your mouth!

On the other hand, I can definitely see The Rock taking the right tone except I can't see him being as bumbling as Jack Burton...
