    Is there something about HFCS that makes it especially bad? I mean, just from high school biology, we learn that fructose is as sweet a sucrose but at half the calories, so at first glance it would look like fructose is better for you.

    HFCS is not really fructose, and it is added to foods which would not have sugar because it makes a good preservative. Plus I don't remember the exact chemistry but it causes a different type of insulin reaction.

    It's not "especially bad" (or at least the evidence isn't all that conclusive) so much as its reduced cost causes it to be used in greater abundance than sugars would be, leading to increased caloric content in artificially sweetened products.
