We all know that all the SW movies are influenced by old Flash Gordon / Buck Rogers serials, and that Lucas also draws influence from Akira Kurosawa... his mentor Francis Coppola... ANH was partly a Western... etc. etc. That's a given.

We ALSO know that sometimes SW films reference a SPECIFIC movie.

    For example:

    ANH
?references old war movies like The Dam Busters -- the end battle is cut from prints of WW2 dogfight movies.
?references "Triumph of the Will" -- the whole end scene is shot-for-shot a remake of a scene from that

    TPM
?references the chariot race in "Ben Hur", sometimes even shot for shot

    AOTC
?references "The Sound of Music" with Padme coming over the hill
?references "The Searchers" with Anakin looking out over the Tusken camp from the cliff

So... what specific movie could/should get a nod in Episode III? How would it be integrated into the story?

I think A New Hope should be heavily referenced in Episode III. ;)

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

Are we going to see shots of Palpatine comparing him to Hitler? The end of AOTC reminds me of that.

    But no specific movie.

A veiled nod to LOTR would be cool, but I'm sure I'll get flamed for that.

Don't forget the "Mysterious Island"/Harryhausen homage in AOTC (Obi-Wan vs. the Acklay).

Don't know too much about classic movies, where Lucas draws his inspiration from, but he has said that he'll be using some particular style/trick/thing from the 30's and 40's, which could draw from one particular movie he has in mind.

GARTH -- LOTR is a book, y'know. The movies came later. :p

That said, Gandalf and Obi-Wan (of the OT) have been compared many times.

I've always seen a comparison between Saruman and Count Dooku.

I'm not sure what particular movie I'd like to see referenced, though. [face_thoughful]

    The Magnificent Seven.

Seven Jedi taking on Dooku's posse, and only three survive (Anakin, Yoda, Obi-Wan)

    //feels like a n00b

I'm betting Anakin's transformation in Vader will come almost frame for frame from Frankenstein.

    Hmm...interesting.

Should it be like that though? That would really make Vader look like a monster - I suppose it depends on how Lucas wants the audience to see Vader by the end of the movie.

As long as it's not TOO mad scientist.

    "It's alive! It's alive!"

Adam, I know LOTR was written - I've only read them...well, I'm not going to say how many times I've read them.

I just thought it would be cool for Lucas to throw in a Gollum-like creature into the Senate or something.

Or a Vulcan. (waiting even more anxiously for flames) [face_laugh]

EDIT: Matt, how can you not see a comparison between Saruman and Dooku? [face_laugh] I found it very strange that Lucas would use the same actor for a major villain, especially considering that LOTR and the PT are being released in the same time period. I love Chris Lee in both roles, but it's still a little off-putting.

    Good thread idea,

I agree with The Magnificant Seven.

I'm not sure about others to reference, maybe The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly or Once Upon a Time in the West with their 3 gunslinger standoff scenes.

perhaps the odessa steps from battleship potemkin. stormtroopers marching down the steps firing into the retreating crowd. baby carrage hovering down uncontroled.

perhaps mace's death will be much like tashiro mifunes in seven samuri. very dramatic.

The baby carriage thing might need to be changed, but MORDOR, I LOVE that idea.

The Odessa Staircase is a classic scene of an old movie, and it sounds right up Lucas' alley. If only someone could have put a bug in Lucas' ear about that!

i like the frankenstein idea, everytime he gets something new the emperor screams "ITS ALIVE!!!!!"

don't forget about ANH, cell block 1138, in reference to luca's movie THX-1138. even though it isnt shown, it is said.

you could have anakin talking to obi wan about sex, just like in american pie when ozzie is talking to jim about "warm apple pie"

and then pan to obi wan gettin' freaky with an intergalatic pie

I think I should be a Dark Lord in Episode III. I would change the whole dirty ropes thing first.

I think purple satin would be nice. Less air resistance when fleeing the good guys.

Episode Three should reference this classic trilogy of 70's film:

    The Cheerleaders

    Revenge of The Cheerleaders

    The Swinging Cheerleaders

    :D

    I'm all about that!

I've always seen a comparison between Saruman and Count Dooku.

*Count Dooku paces in circles around a newly-constructed Super Battle Droid*

Dooku: "Do you know how the droids first came into being? They were parking meters, once. Taken deep underground... tortured... mutilated... and now... perfected, my fighting Super Battle Droid. Whom do you serve?"

    *Super Battle Droid falls apart*

    Dooku: "Clean-up!"

I wish I could remember who wrote that...

Or The Terminator. Padme could crush a super battle droid in an hydraulic press.
