After dozens of used bookstores and a lot of wasted gas I broke down and used Amazon.com to buy Queen of the Demonweb pits.

Day of Infamy by Walter Lord. Looking forward to the account of bombing of Pearl Harbour, having just been there, by the author of the Titanic enthusiast's bible.

Player of Games by Iain M Banks. I was extremely impressed by Consider Phlebas. If Player of Games is even half as good, then I am a Culture fan.

I definitely recommend Lord's A Night to Remember if you haven't read it. I met him and some of the Titanic survivors at a Titanic Historical Society convention in Phildelphia back in the '80s.

The Children of Hurin, JRR Tolkien. I've resisted this one because Turin is such an angsty emo downer of a story, but I finally decided to read it because there are other characters beside Turin who are more likeable, and well, it's JRRT!

Picked up The Exodus Towers and The Plague Forge by Jason M. Hough at the local Waterstones bookstore today They are the 2nd and 3rd books in his Dire Earth cycle. The first one, The Darwin Elevator, was really good.

I'm about two thirds through it now. It's not LotR or The Hobbit in style, still closer to The Silmarillion, but longer and more detailed. There have been a few new characters, and more dialog, and a little more character building. So far, I'd say it's worth reading, but I wouldn't rate it as high as JRRT's finished works. I haven't gotten to the climax yet, so the jury is still out.
