You're right! Shaun of the Dead is also a parody, an homage and a legitimate film with genuinely sympathetic characters. I stand happily corrected and could set fire to myself with a molotov cocktail. :D

Identity Thief... Bateman & McCarthy were hilarious together, and the film flowed rather nicely (and Robert Patrick's supporting role was a hoot, as was the character of Big Chuck), but the ending was completely unoriginal/cliched as all hell.

Haven't seen it in a while. I love Katherine Heigl and it's just a funny film.

Brian DePalma's "The Untouchables" from 1987. I loved it then and I loved it this morning at 3 am when I found it on Netflix.

Butterfield 8. I was sort of impressed with how dark and ambiguous it was willing to be. Elizabeth Taylor plays a call girl whose life is pretty much a ****show, and she half-realizes it and half refuses to recognize it. She's got one male friend whose life she's slowly ruining, and she gets involved with a self-loathing, self-centered rich guy, and it generally avoids going in the predictable direction. The end is a little silly, but overall it's pretty good -- basically a long observation of self-destructive behavior with a good script and good acting.

Argo. Great political thriller. Very streamlined, without unnecessary plot twists. Affleck's directing echoes of great 1970s movies like All The President's Men, most likely on purpose. The airport sequence maintains the suspense in a better way than I've seen in many years.

Argo was indeed good. Suspenseful and entertaining throughout. Too bad half of it is entirely made up.

i didn't really have an issue with the violence, but then i'm not particularly squeamish, unless it comes to needles.

the violence wasn't just gratuatious for the sake of it (ala saw, hostel), and that was the point; not a subtle one but enough to give the movie depth.

    and besides, HANEKE!
