    Sticking with the Bond theme...

Skyfall - A re-watch, as I caught it opening day. I still believe the 2nd act drags a bit, but it's sandwiched between classic opening and closing acts. Craig absolutely owns the role, the supporting cast is spectacular and it's the most beautifully photographed film I've seen in years. - 8/10

S.W.A.T.: I have to say that this was a very well made police thriller with some good performances. Although I think Colin Farrell is much better at playing unhinged supporting characters (see In Bruges) rather than leading roles. Jeremy Renner was good too, and it's nice to see that he has a decent career now. He was homeless in the late 90's and early 2000's.

'Savages'. I really get into Oliver Stone films despite all of his eccentricities but this is one of the worst films I have seen in months. Blake Lively's performance and her character are beyond reprehensible. I sort of had hopes for this film in that the subject matter of the Mexican drug cartels is an intriguing starting point for a narrative but I felt the film was far too self indulgent. It spends too much time creating these ape like california surfers as our heroes. And surprisingly for a Stone film it doesn't say anything about the war on drugs.

Despite the films many flaws Benicio Del Torro is fantastic in it.

    Watched ALIENS last night.

And thanks to Ridley Scott building bridges in the Prometheus/Alien/Blade Runner universe, now every time I hear Newt say "She doesn't have bad dreams, she's just a piece of plastic", Rachael comes to mind.

Pitch Perfect is hilarious and the singing dancing is rather impressive, and vastly entertaining if you're into that kind of thing. My wife and I watched it twice a week or two ago, and laughed ourselves silly both times.

21 and Over... I went to this film with extremely low expectations, and though I laughed a bit more than I thought I would (because there was bound to be a chuckle or two), it still was tremendously formulaic*, devoid of any real substance, and annoying in it's insistence that you have to an insane night out on your 21st birthday, as opposed to merely getting hammered in a respectable way.

*Last year's Project X had all of these same problems (except it's characters being high school folk), but at least that film had something different going for it: the film shot from the POV of either a video camera (recorded by a friend of the main characters)/cell phone cameras).

    The Sky Crawlers
Was recommended this animé a long time ago. So long ago that I don't remember who recommended it, but I think it was a film mag. I liked it thematically, but it was rather depressing. The animation and artwork is gorgeous, and the sound is rich as well. It's rather slow and lingering, so you'll have to bear with it to get to the pay-off of the narrative. But it has some interesting ideas. I liked it.

    4 out of 5.

How was it? I'm kind of interested in going to see it.

And I watched The Impossible the other day. Very good and touching film. I also thought Fernando Velazquez's score was great; it actually reminded me a bit of Morricone.
