Caught Argo and Zero Dark Thirty last week. Liked the latter more. Honestly, of the nominees I've seen to this point, I think Argo was my fourth for fifth favorite. Ah well.

Red Dawn [2012] - A little slicker than the original, and not as brutal--I'll leave it up to you whether or not that's a good thing (I say nay)--this rather unnecessary re-make is basically a watered down version of the original, with very little fresh to offer. It does a slightly better job of setting up the geopolitics and invasion strategy of the enemy than its predecessor, but considering how far-fetched and convoluted it is, I wouldn't exactly call it a feather in it's cap. Wolve...I-)...Hmm? Oh...rines! - 6/10

Recent events kind of make me want to see it even though I hate the original.

Hmmm, that makes it tougher for me to reccomend because I actually like the original. Sure part of it's nostalgia since Cinemax ran it on a loop when I was a kid, but it's also just better made IMO. And certainly more immersive. The biggest problem I had with the new one is that you're always aware that you're watching a slick Hollywood action movie. It only runs a shade over 90 minutes, though, so there's not a big investment time-wise. Purely as a bang-pow action movie it's worth a watch.

I think the original is a silly Reagan relic. I don't like the heavy handed politics of it being used in a really silly action film. The thing that sort of intrigues me(although ironically) is that it tries to make North Koreans capable of launching a full scale invasion of the US

It was originally supposed to be China portrayed as the invaders (Certainly a more plausible scenario), however the studio demanded they go back and CG in N. Korean flags and logos, re-record their dialog with Korean and change the prologue because they didn't want to lose box office in the lucrative Chinese market. It's a total cop out, and a big reason I skipped it in theaters.

Rented Smashed from the iTunes store.

Incredible performance from Mary Elizabeth Winstead, with solid acting from Octavia Spencer, not to mention our good friends from Breaking Bad and Parks and Recreations in supporting roles.

That's EXACTLY the scene that drives me nuts. Mostly because it's probably the best scene in the film and THAT's how they botched the transfer?!

I'm glad somebody knows my pain.
