Yesterday I watched two patient, curious and moody films, A Most Violent Year and Blue Ruin. In the latter, watch for appearances by Jan Brady and Buzz McCallister himself.

Peckinpah's Ride the High Country. Not bad, but not as good as his later westerns.

    'Last Action Hero'

The movie has become much more entertaining after enjoying Charles Dance in 'Game of Thrones'. Seriously it adds at least a star to your pre-'Game of Thrones' rating

I almost watched Last Action Hero again but I haven't seen it since not long after it came out on video, but watching it in the theater felt really uncomfortable. Schwarzenegger needed True Lies after that.

I just watched Kevin Smith's Tusk. Very strange yet refreshing.

The Man Who Would Be King (1975) - Certainly won't win any awards for political correctness, but Caine and Connery's jaunty and charming performances make you forget that their characters and their deeds are rather despicable. - 7/10

    The Fall (2008)

Huge fan of Tarsem Singh. I loved The Cell and thought it a demented masterpiece. This film is just as good sporting a fantastic performance from Lee Pace as a suicidal cripple who finds redemption by telling a fantastical story to an imaginative little girl. The visuals are astounding, and the costumes on display here are gorgeous. Highly recommend it.

Tracks. 2014. It's been a while since I've seen a wandering-in-the-Australian-outback movie, and this one is the chronicle of Robyn Davidson, who trekked halfway across Australia with camels and was covered by National Geographic.

St. Vincent. Bill Murray is, as always, hilarious. The casting is great all around; even the kid actor is convincing. The director has a keen eye for visual comedy and a general knack for quality shots, which can be rare in comedy. It's funny and it doesn't go overboard on the drama despite straining itself a little to hit that serious-indie-comedy note. It comes up a little short in that it's got a rather trite, cutesy ending that it telegraphs anyway (though at least it's doing something with the idea that you don't really know this person), it's got a bit of awkward plotting where Terrence Howard's character just disappears, and overall it feels like it was reaching a little farther than its grasp, but it's really good for a first feature. I certainly enjoyed it.

Thor 2: The Dark World (2013) - (re-watch) Thor? More like bore. The first Thor is perhaps the MCU's most middling effort, but it works, thanks mostly to a nice character arc for our hero and a sweet love story. The sequel tries to up the epic, but heart and character are collateral damage in this overblown and undercooked war of the demigods. - 5/10

I actually liked Thor 2 better than the first one. To each his own.

I may actually be in the minority. While the RT score favors the first one %77 to %66, and their IMDb scores are virtually even (7 to 7.1 in favor of the sequel), the title of every other thread on the sequel's message board is extolling its awesomeness.

I agree. Then again, getting a prostate exam from a cactus would be better than IM3.

Inherent Vice, 2014. Nice flashback to 1970 for a quirky and visually appetizing private eye story. Cast members I didn't know at all were an added bonus. It's a treat to get two movies from Paul Thomas Anderson within about two years.
