i'm watching the roosevelt's: an intimate history. about halfway through episode two. i started it because i was craving some ken burns and somehow hadn't gotten to it yet, but so far it's way more interesting than i anticipated. one of the first things that struck me was just how crazy it was to be alive around the turn of the century. not just all the industrial breakthroughs and groundbreaking inventions and stuff, but how hard it was just to live to be the age i am now without contracting some horrible, fatal disease. teddy lost his mom and his wife on the same day to different diseases? i mean i knew things were like that, but still guess i really take for granted all the advances in medicine in the relatively short time since then.

 

NFL S95W10 - Titans vs. Jags: This game wasn't easy on the eyes, both in terms of time uniforms and quality of game play.

Grey Anatomy - S12E08: A whole of stuff went down in this episode, but I think my favorite part was Arizona and the female fireman.

Warriors vs. Clippers: Amazing comeback from 23 points down. Dubs take it and improve to 13-0.

The Big Bang Theory - S09E09: Penny says the orange lingerie that Leonard gave her makes her feels like a slutty carrot; Howard, Raj, Bernadette and Raj's GF volunteer at a soup kitchen; Sheldon and Amy try to be friends.

The Tudors, Seas.1, Ep.1 "In Cold Blood" (2007) - Balancing the sex and scheming of pretty people, this is really just a historical soap opera (not that there isn't a good dose of that in the actual history). Tone down the former and it often feels like a CW "young adult" drama, though thankfully we're spared bad anachronistic pop music.

The production values are very good, and the performances are generally up to the material, for what that's worth. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers plays Henry VIII almost as if he's channeling Joaquin Phoenix from Gladiator, though his king isn't nearly so cruel nor does he seem to be teetering on the edge of madness. It's more his delivery. But the standout performances for me were Henry Cavill, showing great heretofore (at least to me) un-displayed charm as Charles Brandon, and especially Sam Neil as the scheming Cardinal Wolsey.

Having heard good things about the series over the years, and in the mood for some historical drama from the era, I began with great enthusiasm that was quickly dashed upon the rocks of this very mediocre and uninspired first episode. I'll attempt at least one more before I wave the white flag. - 6/10

NFL S95W10 - Raiders vs. Lions: So like Collin Kaepernick, the Raiders just regress as the season went on.

NFL S95W10 - 49ers vs. Seahawks: It's sad to know the game is over before it even begins. Basically, this was a game to see if Gabbert was a fluke or legit after his game against the Falcons. He looked pretty mediocre legit. Definitely better than Kaepernick.

The Walking Dead S06E07: Damn emo teenagers.

The Amazing Race S2809: This has not been a real compelling season, as it's been mostly a show of who's going to finish in second place.
