Picket Fences: Frank the Potato Man (1992) – Ron Lagomarsino

The little town of Rome is beset by a “serial bather.” Someone’s breaking into houses and bathing in the tubs. This sounds cute and starts off very funny, but then it morphs into a surprisingly dark episode once the cops figure out that there’s a sexual element to the break-ins as well. Then suspicion falls on Frank the Potato Man, a poor drifter that essentially lives in the woods near town, and the episode morphs into a meditation on civil rights. This is the show’s first genuinely great episode. The mystery of the bather is surprisingly compelling and creepy and the solution to the mystery was genuinely surprising; seriously, it was something that I genuinely did not see coming AT ALL and that’s incredibly rare for me anymore. And the meditation on civil rights and class bigotry is quite moving and thought-provoking. One of the characters explains quite rationally that she understands the importance of civil rights and believes in them in the large scheme; she then goes on to say that in this case, however, she’s afraid for her children and so she doesn’t care. This feels absolutely of the moment in a lot of ways. Twenty-five years on, we’re still having this argument. Ray Walston is particularly good in this episode and Fyvush Finkel, a character played entirely for laughs to this point, has a really surprising and poignant dramatic scene. This is great television: entertaining, suspenseful, witty, thought-provoking. Picket Fences, in this episode at least, gets everything it’s after. 4 stars.

tl;dr – suspenseful & creepy plot about sex criminal morphs into thought-provoking and well-written meditation on civil rights; great performances, great writing, great television. 4 stars.

    Picket Fences!

The Transformers: S1 Ep. 7 "S.O.S. Dinobots" (1984) - Plot; Stumbling on dinosaur fossils buried within their headquarters, the Autobots are inspired to create a team of dinosaur-themed transformers. When they prove to be unpredictable, Optimus Prime orders them deactivated, but after a majority of the Autobots find themselves taken prisoner by the Decepticons, the powerful but dimwitted Dinobots are the only ones left who can stop Megatron's plan.

Revisiting the G1 Transformers cartoon has proven to be a bit of disappointment. Not a surprise necessarily, but a disappointment none the less. A childhood favorite (along with its Hasbro toy line), it doesn't hold up nearly as well as fellow Sunbow produced Hasbro toy-tie G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. Where the latter deftly mixed action, adventure and humor into a consistently entertaining 22 minutes of TV, Transformers is often bland, clunky and redundant. In small chunks it primes (no pun intended) the nostalgia pump, but this isn't a series I'd ever binge watch. - 5.5/10

    - I collect 70s/80s toys, but sadly my G1 TF collection still only stands at one (Sideswipe).

    - I found it a bit troubling that the Autobots more or less seemed to see the Dinobots as slaves. They first order them to clear away rubble ("And be quick about it!") and then when the dimwitted dinos rebel, Optimus orders them destroyed! And these are the good guys.

Picket Fences: Remembering Rosemary (1992) – Donald Petrie

In this episode, a woman that’s been in a catatonic state since the suicide of her employer ten years ago finally speaks, saying just one word: “Murder.” Max pushes to reopen the suicide case and this causes conflict with Jimmy, who was the lead investigator on the case ten years ago. Thomas Ryan is quite good as the surviving husband of the suicide (?) victim and Skerritt is particularly good here as he’s forced to wrestle with the accusation that his earlier investigation was sloppy and his mixed emotions at dragging up a bad event in the town’s history after everyone has healed from it. This episode does eventually get pretty cartoonish because, as the first season’s Halloween episode, it wants to ape some horror movie clichés. A late sequence in a spooky old house comes with shrieking strings, thunder booms and lightning flashes which is all in good fun, but kind of undercuts the serious drama of the early part of the episode. Still, a great premise, some nice character work and an intriguing twist. 3 stars.

tl;dr – Halloween episode goes for scares as a cold case gets reopened; fine character work and performances, but the serious elements are undercut by a late episode detour into comedy. 3 stars.
