Kind of mind boggling to me that you and my older brother are the same age. You seemed much older to me. In a respectful way.

I really like the back round expression. The foreground expression bears the look you get on your face when you run into someone you don't actually like, but have to pretend to like.

    Ah, the Eighties.

    I LIVED for MIAMI VICE.

*Tries to sing* "Vice. Miami! Vice vice vice vice vice."

Crockett, Tubbs, Switek, Zito, Trudy, Gina, Lieutenant Castillo, Elvis the Alligator, the St Vitus Dance undercover yacht - I drokking loved that show.

Youtube banned the vid, but my favourite ever gunfight oof all time, was from the second season Miami Vice episode/telemovie, The Prodigal Son, for which this is a trailer.

Generations have a decade with their music. The Fifties, Sixties; mine was the Eighties. The music from that era, particularly rave, techno, that sort of thing, was on my frequency.

    My favourite decade.

EDIT: The Hitman and Her from British television. If this series, Pete Waterman (a peer of Simon Cowell) and Michaela Strachan doing music shows from random discos and nightclubd around the country, ever appeared on dvd, I would snap it up.

Is that where the "They call me MR. Tubbs" thing came from?

Possibly as a play on "They call me, Mr Tibbs."

In the Heat of the Night was a 1967 movie with Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger.

Some small redneck town in the US, someone gets murdered. A sheriff's deputy, rather than doing any investigating - this was pre-CSI by several decades - finds an unknown black guy waiting for a train, arrests him for it, and hauls him in front of his police chief.

Suspect empties his pockets, wallet sounds a bit heavy, and metallic as it hits the chief's desk. Police badge inside - he's a cop too! Homicide investigator from the City, the Mr Tibbs in question.

Jelly shoes. My sister and I both had a pair.

I also remember my sister and our neighbour friend sitting around my double deck cassate player taping songs off the radio. I used to tape tv shows on cassate and listen to my portable cassate player while at camp.

There was no internet in our house, only a big giant 24 inch tube tv at one point. Our phone used to be an old yellow rotary phone. The printer was an impact printer and the computer was a commadore 64 and it took several minutes to load up one game. I timed it once on a cassate tape, ten minutes and it was only half way through loading to a game at the end.

my dads old escort had an 8 track in the car. we also had an 8 track with a record player in the living room. I used to listen to old records and spin around in the living room until I was dizzy

You kids these don't know how good you got it with these super fast computers and all this tech...

    Those were the days :D

Ah yes. I remember those portraits.

It's easy to goof on the profile pic in the upper corner, but that was a deliberate part of the style that was used in this format: normal "photo smile" for the main image in the lower left, and then a soft smile or a small grin was used for the upper right pic. Few kids, IMO, looked cool in the profile image. It's as if those secondary images were intended to make kids look silly. Mine made me look like I'd just gotten away with the worlds biggest prank.[face_mischief]

The 1980s in semi-rural NZ was like the 1950s.

Oh, and and what nuclear threat?

I'm pretty sure a TV series came to be out of that movie, in which the former mayor of my hometown was a leading character named Bubba.

Your memories have been enlightening. Thanks!

This feels maybe more early 90s rather than late 80s.

Looking back, I kind of like that I have the DJ's voice in the intro sometimes -- brings back more fond memories. Well, it would if I had a tape player.

I desperately need to get one of those turntables with a USB connector so I can pick up my record collection from my parent's (everything from Run-DMC to the Beatles and The Who to Johnny Cash, plus 80s stuff like Squeeze and Men at Work), they're all safely stored in Macintosh computer carrying case.

On the subject of games, I think Dark Castle for the Mac is still my all-time favorite.

I had to get one of those because of my mother's record collection (finding a turntable that played 78s was the big challenge). The converter do-hickey I bought was about $25 or so. Also worked for some of my records that weren't made into CDs (or worse, the 2-record LPs that were released as 1 cd with some songs removed). Also a couple tapes I had were never converted or just extremely rare/out of print. The software that came with the adapter wasn't the most intuitive, but I had someone deliberately trying to distract me.
    Good experience.
    Definitely recommended.

The trio of the Lakers, Celtics and 76ers made the NBA great for a decade. Has never come close since.

    My personal sports highlight:
    [image=http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VA2kdrpBiJE/TR2YqZ0uusI/AAAAAAAAAok/2IsNWLVBMhU/s1600/1988.miami.jpg]

Otherwise not so great for me -- Germany were runners up in 2 World Cups, the Yankees had their first championship-less decade since the 1910s.

It was also the decade that saw the space shuttle take flight. Also the decade in which many kids witnessed a spaceship blow up seconds after launch live on TV. One of my most vivid memories of the 80's. :(

In 1989, Joseph Hazelwood of the Exxon Valdez became the most reviled ship captain on the planet, a title he held unchallenged until last weekend.

The 80s was big for British theatre, in part because of the world-dominating super musicals that came out. Cats, Les Miserables & The Phantom of the Opera are legendary in their genre and the latter two still pull huge crowds 25 years after they first started. Cats ran over 20 years, Blood Brothers also
