What were the Jedi counsel's options?

    If, after years or just months of training, the Jedi counsel realize that Anakin is not fit to become a Jedi. What do they do then?

    Kick him out of the Order and let him try and find out about the force on his own?

    Kick him out of the Order with a promise from him that he will never use the force again?

    Or, must they destroy him to ensure he does not move to the dark side?

    I'm not sure about this from that scenario...but I think they would have sent him to some agricultural planet and let him use his force talents there. It's mentioned somewhere in the EU.

    No, because they risk letting Anakin be corrupted by the Dark Side.

    No, for the same reason as no. 1 and because the Sith would influence Anakin into joining them.

    They can't do that because they only use their powers for knowledge and defense, not to attack and besides, this type of action would backfire on them because it'll jumpstart the same disaster that they're trying to prevent.

    In the EU, Jedi that fail to be accepted as padawans or fail completely as padawans get sent to the Agricultural Corps. It's kind of stupid, but whatever.
