PG-13 movies make the most money at the box office these days.

i wouldn't mind a pg rating, but if it made them cut things out that would be otherwise cool i'd rather the pg13

I'd prefer PG-13 so they can finally show the affects of the consequences of war.

Wouldn't that require a 15 or over? Seriously though, this is space fantasy that's had a universal appeal since it's beginning. I'd go with a PG. If Disney go with a PG-13 from the outset, then they're stating a precedent in general as to the overall theme and tone of the ST itself. Personally I don't think they'll do that. But whatever...

I'm predicting PG-13. partially 'cause of the new ratings like everyone else said but I'm also predicting (and hoping tbh) that the ST goes down a darker, more serious path, but in a natural way that is still true to SW.

To do it justice would likely take an R or above but I don't buy the kid excuse. This is *war* it's NOT a game.

I think it will be PG-13, primarily for two reasons:
    ROTS was PG-13.
Everything with any level of action or violence is PG-13 these days. They've actually gotten stricter in giving out ratings than they used to be.

Agreed on the "PG-13 is the most common for the biggest blockbusters nowadays" idea. PG is more restrictive now than it was back in the 80's, so what they'd be able to say and show would be less, compared to the OT.

Yup. I think that any of the OT movies would probably be PG-13 if they came out today.

I likewise think OT would be more graphic if came out now earning PG-13 rating.

PG-13 is in essence that PG used to be. Didn't they had to push to get ANH to PG instead of the G that it was going to go out as?

They didn't want to be tagged as a G movie in the 70's.

    http://motleyvision.org/ldscinema/2012/06/the-history-of-the-pg-13-rating/

What was the reaction to the new rating?
Because the new rating was presented as a reclassification for PG films, it was anticipated that filmmakers and theater owners would be opposed, since the more restrictive rating would (in theory) reduce the potential audience — and thus box office — compared to the PG rating they would have gotten under the old system. That anticipated opposition and revenue loss, however, never materialized because the PG-13 proved to be a blessing rather than a curse for those films.
Just how do the PG-13 box office numbers compare to other ratings?
In the movie industry today, PG-13 is *THE* rating for box office success. Since 1995, PG-13 films have earned over $35 billion more than R-rated films at the box office, despite there being over 1500 MORE R-rated films released during that time period. Since 1995 PG-13 films have outnumbered PG films two to one – ironic, since the PG-13 was originally supposed to be a smaller, specialized subset of PG films. The “exception” has now become the “rule”

The two biggest PG domestic PG hits of all time are TPM followed by ANH.

I have to disagree with EHT and DARTH_BELO society is MUCH more lax as to what is 'bad' and what isn't . Supernatural constantly uses 'douche' and 'Richard' (the D version LOTS) 25 years ago those were HBO only words.

Ratings now are completely different than they were back in the day. We now have 'hard R' Soft R' or just R. shoot some of the PG-13 films now would have received an R 25 years ago... Remember Blue Lagoon? I do because that was the first woman I saw nekid! [face_dancing] GOD I loved me some Brooke Shields-but I digress.. I remember reading an article in the NY Times as a child on how the movie was going to be given an X rating.. now that film would barely hit R if not probably PG-13.

[face_thinking] I don't know....I seem to remember movies like Indiana Jones (which was full of punching, shooting and blood, not to mention heads melting/exploding), and that was PG. Ghostbusters was full of swear words and adult themes, and was PG. Also Back To The Future was full of swear words, including the "S" word, and using "the Lord's name in vain" and whatnot, and that was also just PG. Quite a bit worse than PG movies nowadays...

both are correct in a sense. ratings have gotten stricter, but the stigma has lessened. hence television broadcasting being looser but standards changing for movie ratings (which are two entirely different things tbh sense public-access television is going to have to have "more responsibility"). a film is more likely to get a pg-13 these days but fewer people are gonna be like "omfg pg-13 hide my kids".

Top 10 PG Rated movies of 2015, don't see TFA fitting in with these:
    1 Cinderella (2015) BV PG $198,782,354 3,848 $67,877,361 3,845 3/13
    2 Home (2015) Fox PG $172,064,660 3,801 $52,107,731 3,708 3/27
3 The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water Par. PG $162,994,032 3,680 $55,365,012 3,641 2/6
    4 Tomorrowland BV PG $77,314,310 3,972 $33,028,165 3,972 5/22
    5 Paddington W/Dim. PG $76,139,286 3,355 $18,966,676 3,303 1/16
    6 Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 Sony PG $68,432,065 3,633 $23,762,435 3,633 4/17
    7 McFarland, USA BV PG $44,333,249 2,792 $11,020,798 2,755 2/20
    8 The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel FoxS PG $33,035,338 2,022 $8,540,370 1,573 3/6
    9 Strange Magic BV PG $12,429,583 3,020 $5,504,441 3,020 1/23
    10 Beyond the Mask

I think the whole "I don't care about the ratings, I just want a good movie" hides from reality- do you want a good movie in the sense of Cinderella or The Hunger Games? The rating will tell a bit of a story on how the movie looks. I don't want TFA to be Cinderella-like, I think that sort of tone would be a fail, just my opinion. I think by the trailer we can pretty much assume PG13 at this point.

Just a note from 'Down Under' - our film ratings system is a little different to yours.

Revenge of the Sith was the first Star Wars film to get an 'M' rating, all the rest were PG.

I'm guessing it'll be PG here in Australia.

    Our ratings -

    G - General
    PG - Parental Guidance Recommended
M - recommended for Mature Audiences
MA15+ - for Mature Audiences 15 years or older - can be refused sale or renting these films if under 15 y/o
R18 - Restricted to over 18 year olds
X18 - Restricted to over 18 year olds (porn)

LANDO_ROCKS, as a rule of thumb, PG-13 maps to our M and R maps to our MA. AOTC was released here as PG, but the DVD cut was M.

AOU and Winter Soldier were both M here, as was Guardians of the Galaxy. I'm pretty sure TFA will similarly be PG-13 with an Australian M classification.

What part of it would make it a higher classification than TPM or AOTC though?

The scene where Kylo attacks the village perhaps? If it's shown in the flashback then maybe the raid on the Jedi Academy?

Like I said, AOTC jumped from PG to M, pretty much due to the new edit of the Obi-Wan/Jango fight scene. So presumably AOTC was borderline as it was. All it takes is certain level of violence--it doesn't need to be graphic.

I'm certain TFA will be PG-13 in the U.S., and it's rare for a PG-13 movie not to be M in Australia.

...PG-13, of course, for intense sequences and spontaneous nerdgasms.
