I wrote in the Confirmation Bias thread that A.O. Scott of the NYT is my go-to critic for TFA. He's a fanboy of about my age who lived the 1977 Star Wars hype as a boy.

Yeah, I care what he thinks, not that I can't like the movie if he doesn't, or won't dislike it if he does love it. But I appreciate the shared perspective and history. As far as I'm concerned he and I and our generation are the only people qualified to judge Star Wars movies.

I'm joking. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Even movie critics born after 1980.

Only critic that matters is me.

I have shunned critics since I bought into Harry from AintItCoolNews for a while and his reviews. Then, I saw the light and figured out how stupid I was for drinking that kool aid. Now, I don't listen to anyone but myself, don't care about anyone elses opinions and just ride solo.

The one review I'm really itching to read is Drew McWeeny's. The others I can take or leave, but of course I'm hoping that the general consensus is largely positive.

Critics look for different things in a movie than do regular movie-goers. I am no critic..i go to a movie to enjoy it...plain and simple. I am not looking at character development under a microscope....I am not looking at all aspects of cinematography...plot arch....etc. BUT critcs do..that is specifically what they do...they have to watch for flawed acting, bad stories....you name it...they are looking for the bad of a movie...to be critical of it...hence their name. Sorry if there are legit critics reading here...some would argue that they simple critique it...for better or worse...but I think we all know that most Critics tear movies apart.

Myself..i want to be entertained. I want a fun story....I want to be ooo'd and ahhhh'd. I want to finally know what happens 30 years after ROTJ.

For the record, i still cringe at parts in the PT...but i still love them as movies.

This feels like a lot of preemptive defense from fans who been defending critically savaged films in the prequels for years.

If a critic thinks a movie is good, even a giant blockbuster, they'll let you know. Very rare does anyone go in waiting to hate a movie. Mad Max: Fury Road (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/mad_max_fury_road/?search=mad max), Inside Out (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/inside_out_2015/), and The Martian are some of the most critically acclaimed films of the year (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_martian/?search=the mart).

More importantly though, a good critic(of which there are many) can express their opinion about a piece of work in a way that may not reflect your own, but allows you to see where they're coming from.

They'll like it a lot. Although even with all the "Star Wars is saved!" positivity I suspect there will be an undercurrent of skepticism about Star Wars being made into even more of a "product" than it was before. I think some critics will acknowledge that it is great Star Wars while they also question if more Star Wars is something we really need (especially every year).

I bet the critics will give it an 8.0 or something like that. I predict good ratings from the critics. Not that it matters.

For me, the only thing that really matters is my opinion of the film. Critics liking it or disliking it won't change the way I feel about it. They are welcome to their opinions, but that's all they are - opinions.

I think it'll be the most acclaimed film in the saga—counting contemporaneous reviews of the OT—since the original movie in '77. But I doubt it'll be as good as Empire.

I'm interested in seeing what particular critics have to say--A.O. Scott, Matt Zoller Seitz, etc.

Like I said in another thread I don't think the film will drop below a 85%. However a high 90% of critics liking it is possible, given that I don't think the film will be getting heavy critical analysis. And even if there are flaws creatively to pick out, the likely hood of it still leaning towards a positive review is still high.

I expect a lot of of, "Breaths new life into the franchise," and probably a good many,"At least it's better than all 3 prequels combined."

The greatest thing about RT is they rated ROTS higher than ROTJ which IMHO is totally correct.....

I'm guessing somewhere in the mid to high 80s on RT. Not that I really care, though. The only SW RT rating I agree with is ESB. Phantom Menace is unfairly low, and I don't even like that movie.

Well said, man. Goodburger has a 32% on RT, so I'm not even gonna bother seeing The Hateful Eight.

Since ot vs pt isn't allowed here, I will simply say that you are wrong and that'll be the end of this.

Exactly in line with my thoughts. Even the more negative reviews will be overall positive because, really, does anyone want to be the party pooper? If you look at the rotten AOU reviews, they're as much a reaction to Marvel burnout as they are to the film itself. TFA will benefit from a decade-long hiatus.

I think they are close. Rotten Tomatoes has both movies at 79% fresh so it seems like somebody agrees with me.

ROTJ had some real issues for me: Ewoks, neutered Han, another Death Star, etc. It's beginning and ending were superb though.

ROTS is by far the best the prequel so maybe that's clouding my vision. Watching Anakin turn into Vader was why we all wanted to see the prequels. In the first 30 minutes of ROTS, we also got a heroic and likable Anakin who owned Dooku and saved the day 100x, which was missing from I and II IMO. We also saw Obi-Wan's reference make sense "And he was good friend". We got to see Darth Sidious in action. I kind of wished in hindsight that II and III were I and II and we got Vader in the suit for a whole movie, but that's just me.

I think the critics will put TFA movie in the 85%-90% fresh class. We'll see.

In the dimension that film criticism is a joke of a profession in which you can take down a movie because it's funny, or it's over-budget, or it follows whatever nitpick or beef you have against it and simply take it down.

Much like Bond, film critics don't like or are even willing to get Star Wars, so it's very possible in my opinion that it might be taken down for similar reasons. That it's a rehash of the OT, or something of that nature (which In my opinion would be a much more valid criticism than what they are throwing out at the last JB film)

This is just demonstrably untrue. Critics weren't mixed on Spectre cuz it was Bond. They were mixed cuz it was a bad movie! Skyfall was VERY well-received, as was Casino Royale.

Movie critics are not some evil boogeyman ready to take down your favorite movies. They have standards for what they think are good films, but they like fun escapist pictures just as much as you do. If a critic thinks The Force Awakens is good, they'll tell you.

Most critics now grew up with Star Wars as opposed to when the original films were released. That's both a positive and a negative.

I do a lot of Oscar-watching/predictions. As of now, there are three big films by three big Oscar-favorite directors yet to open that everybody is interested in. "Joy" from David O. Russell, "The Revenant" by Alejandro G. Inarritu, and The Hateful Eight by Quentin Tarantino. They don't open until December, so I think the combination of those three AND Star Wars is the reason behind this delay. You don't want to put out your top 10 Best American Movies of the Year list and have it seem irrelevant cuz it didn't even consider four of the biggest films.
