Poor directing is in the eye of the beholder, but it's a fallacy to think that getting good performances from the actors is all that directing is about. Personally, I'll take Lucas's compositions over Abram's performances any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I always felt it was the way Lucas tells the story through the editing. There's nobody better.

Apparently it's in a lot of eyes then, as Star Wars isn't immune from poor directing and the fans are quite vocal about it. I say let's give Abrams the benefit of the doubt, as nobody has an idea how this movie will turn out yet. He may surprise you and go in a direction you'd never guess he was capable of. If the movie tanks, then you can gloat. :)

I've always felt the PT was rushed, editing-wise. I hope JJ completes one thought before jumping to another, if you take my meaning.

Anything from the EU :) Seriously, the odd reference or even a brief cameo is fine, but as I have almost no experience with the EU (the stuff I have read was, well, rubbish) I don't want to be sitting there feeling like I'm supposed to know what's going on because of some 3rd-rate SW novel.

Also, the cinematography HAS to be SW-like and not stylized in any way. I can't imagine JJ walking all over the SW "feel", but you never know. It could be the most awesome sci-fi movie ever made, but if it doesn't look, feel, taste, sound and smell like SW.....then it aint SW. And it better not be made with 3D as a priority.

If you aren't familiar with the EU....how will you know it's from the EU?

Because I'll know before I actually see the movie. Then, anything "new" I see I'll be wondering if I'm missing something that was covered in the EU.

I hope JJ can do what Lucas has been capable of in SW, in general. Namely, layering several ideas at once, through visual, sound, and narrative medium, of varying degrees of depth and cohesion. I will be ecstatic if he can pull that off. ;)

I can't possibly imagine any scenario in which I would walk out from the theater (if anything, the tickets are just too darn expensive to let them go to waste like that :p).

If the commercials before the movie were all Nazi propaganda from WWII, I might leave.

True. That happened in ANH but luckily the credits rolled and I left anyway.

What would get you so mad that you would walk out of Episode VII?

    Easy...

A descendant of Obi-Wan. Obi was celibate. I don't want some child/grand-child mucking up his good name and story. (I've heard rumors that he will have a half black child or grand-child, which makes it even more unbelievable)

A lens flare is a reminder that there is a lens, and a camera, and I'm watching a movie, and that pulls me out of the story.

Agreed. It's terribly annoying and unnecessary.

IMO, the best way to be able to enjoy Episode VII is to set your expectations really low. That way, whatever JJ releases will be spectacular.
I have already started filling my head with the return of Jar Jar Binks, Gungans, and Ewoks.

    :p

That happened to me once when I found myself watching Pan's Labyrinth instead of INLAND EMPIRE. Luckily the latter film hadn't started yet, even though it was my second night in a row seeing it.

...what if he plays Lando's son? Or Leia's by a second marriage? Or some other horrid concoction?

A giant Romulan mining ship appearing in the middle of the events of ANH from the future creating an alternate timeline (not to say it bothered me with Star Trek per se but time travel and altering of history in SW should NEVER happen).
