he was the grand moff aboard ds1 who saw the threat of the rebel alliance. if he had any kind of real pull, how would he have dealt with the threat?

Tagge was NOT a Grand Moff. Tagge was a High General. As such, he was under Tarkin and Vader, and the Imperial Army equivalent to Admiral Motti (Tagge was in charge of the troops, Motti was in charge of the ships). What would have happened had he been in charge is exactly the same thing that happened with Tarkin in charge. He dies when Luke blows up the Death Star.

perhaps he was forced to remain aboard the death star. If he had more pull, maybe he would have vacated as Tarkin was suggested to

Tagge wasn't forced to stay on the Death Star, he was part of the Command Triumvirate of Tarkin, Motti and himself.

    From the Databank:

Though Tagge had a reputation as a brilliant tactician, an analysis of his command decisions aboard the Death Star indicates such praise was undeserved. The uninspired Tagge distributed the Death Star's gunners alphabetically throughout the station, rather than in logical, strategically-defined patterns. This led to disunified firing patterns and less than optimum performance from the Imperial gunners during the Battle of Yavin.

So using that, I doubt the battle would have turned out any different.

That does seem silly, except a large part of the gunners had to be clones. Alphabetically by name with the clones would be in some kind of birth order, wouldnt it ?

How the hell did he get in a position of power?! However, he did have a good point about the rebels

No, because not all of them were clones anymore. Those that were clones came from various sources.

And yet Chief Bast - who suggested retreat and was brushed off by Tarkin - survived, yet Tagge and other generals/admirals did not. Hrm.

QFT. The Imperial Army (navy, whatever) at this point is diverse. There are clones serving as military personnel but some were also soldiers trained at the academy.
