Otto, first of all: well done mate. I agree 110% with most of what you said. If only everyone thought as we did...then we could make this country great again.

The weather here is miserable...Don't expect a summer, because you will never get one

I prefer English summers to NZ summers. They're usually hotter and last longer.

    "WASP" (White. Anglo. Saxon. Protestant)

That's a stupid term. All Anglo Saxons are white, making the first word irrelevant, and not all English are Anglo Saxon, making it even more irrelevant. :p

I've just been watching the main evening news on BBC, ITV and Ch. 4, and they've been reporting that the government have finally almost caught up with what I've been saying all along, that is that we're no longer going to take in every Tom, Dick and Harry from around the world and will set up a quota system based on a person's qualifications, ability to speak our language, knowledge of our culture etc. before they're allowed into the country to stay. Asylum Seekers will also only be allowed temporary residence in the country until the threat in their home country has gone away, then they'll be forced to leave. Admittedly, I do believe that it's a case of closing the stable door 30+ years after the horse has bolted, 'cause most of the third world is already here! But at least they're doing something I guess, even if it is somewhat too late to make any difference.

That's a stupid term. All Anglo Saxons are white, making the first word irrelevant, and not all English are Anglo Saxon, making it even more irrelevant.

It's an American expression, so what do you expect?! Being "Anglo Saxon" in the US doesn't necessarily mean you're white. :p But seriously, I never said that all English were Anglo Saxon. I simply said that I was an Englishman who's a "WASP", meaning that I'm a true native of this country. In other words, I'm not of mixed race. Please read my posts more carefully in future.

Huh? I was only saying it's a stupid term. I know it's an American expression and I've always thought it was stupid. Please don't assume so much in future. ;)

Otto, you said something about people in the north being friendlier? Well, Ive never been to Europe but can you honestly say that? What if you just met the wrong people? Im sure alot of the people in the south are friendly too.

Someone else said that and I just agreed that, on the whole, Northerners have a reputation for being more friendly, open and having what we in the South lost 20+ years ago, a neighbourhood where everyone in the area socialised and looked out for one another. But then again, the North has a reputation for being more crime ridden, where crooks go around with Usi 9mm sub-machine guns shooting people in convenience stores.

My personal experience of living in the South is that people are very insular and unfriendly, where they rely on a small "tribe" of friends and that's it. They're very "clicky" all over the south, where people aren't easily accessible unless they allow you to be one of the chosen few in their tribe. Does that make any sense? If so, then I wish you could explain it to me sometime!

EDIT: Oh yes, I've been to your neck of the woods twice (California), along with Navada and Florida. Nice place California, especially San Francisco. I also liked L.A. as well, but Las Vegas stunk.

Whenever I go to the South in America, they are too friendly. It's kind of creepy. Every time a car passes they're smiling and waving. Even if they don't know you. But I live in Southern California and the people here are icy. Smile and they cuss you out and run away thinking you're a rapist or something. No one trusts anyone. But it is California...

I've had the same sort of response as well from people in the South of England. When I was living near Portsmouth in Hampshire, I was going somewhere and I stopped to ask a guy directions. When he heard my voice he just looked up from washing his car and stared at me with saucer eyes as if I'd just pointed a 50 Magnum pistol at him! And no, I didn't get directions from him, just dead silence. Admittedly though, I didn't realise it at the time but I'd just walked through one of Hampshire's roughest ghettos known as Lee Park. But still, that's not the only time I've recieved the icy shoulder when I've tried to talk to strangers.

It's opposite! In America, they're nicer in the South, In Europe, they're nicer in the North! That's weird...

My parents owned a convenience store in Hampshire, and as soon as we moved in people started to boycott the shop because we were from 80 miles away! We even saw little old grannies struggling to the supermarket about a mile+ in town past our shop because we were strangers in the area!!! Now that's what I call "clicky" on the level of Children of the Corn!

EDIT: Oh, and please, go easy on the "Europe" thing, will yah? I'm English yah know, not European! :p

It totally sucks big time. I completely agree. I've been in Australia for a year and see how good life really can be. I'm going back as soon as possible...I live in Manchester and its miserable, grim, grey, cold...the list is endless. I'm in fact off to the Algarve in Southern Portugal in 2 week for 2 months. Haha. Will watch Ep3 there!

sorry otto, you're a 'true' native of this country- so you've actually traced your family tree back to the most unrecorded of times in british history and know with absolute certainty there's no conquerers blood in you family?

what's your definition of 'true native'?

Besides the weather England isn't too bad
Their just isn't that much to do once you've been to the museums and national monuments a few times.

All you can do is re-visit them over & over until you go mad.

I still stand by my original post... if you don't like England (or the UK) sod off somewhere else.

Maybe if we got rid of the people who do nothing but moan about how crap this country is while doing nothing to improve it the rest of us could go about doing something constructive.

Richie, there's limitless things to do... we have hundreds of years of history to explore for one thing... beautiful countryside, mountains, lakes, forests, cities, beautiful architecture... I could go on!

Edit - I love my country and am proud of it, it's the people who I'm not overkeen on!

    Okay, Nik.

I KNOW that was intended for me. I can understand that.

"Maybe if we got rid of the people who do nothing but moan about how crap this country is while doing nothing to improve it the rest of us could go about doing something constructive."

...I also want to say, that I am trying to do everything I can to better my life; DON'T THINK FOR AN INSTANT I HAVEN'T TRIED! Why do you think I am going back to Uni? I WANT to better myself and gain some qualifications so I can be somewhere that I am happy and earning a decent wage. I am sick of living in the situation I am in. I want to dig myself out of this hole I am living in. Slating me isn't going to speed things along.

If you don't like me, fine. I can deal with that. Cut the foreplay, and just tell me.

Well you know something I don't then because it wasn't aimed at anyone in particular otherwise I would have quoted what you said! Infact I don't think I even read your post I only read from the newbies post down!

Living in England is like living in a big bag of Revels! :p
You got ur nice ones, maltesers and pure chocolate, the u got ur nasty ones, like coffee (Why do they put them in there, it's just plain mean!) Then,of course, u've got ur nuts!
Sure, u'll occasionally end up with a coffee, but when u do, u've just gotta keep digging till u find an orange! :D

Oh no... Now I'm craving chocolate.. =P~
