The guy came running out of the gate; his first four film scores are all terrific: Magdalene; Triumph of the Spirit; Star Trek VI; and Christopher Columbus are all epic, powerhouse scores, with large orchestras, choirs, etc. Just terrific stuff. He was being hailed in the early nineties as the best of the young film composers. And then his next two projects were Untamed Heart and A Simple Twist of Fate, and he suddenly became pigeonholed as a composer of such stuff, which is very limiting. He's had a couple fine scores since then -- Picture Bride and Free Willy III both have some great stuff, and his The Tempest tone poem for Varèse's Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare compilation is fantastic. But now it's been years since he's had an assignment, and his latest is The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants?! What?! How did such a good young composer, who came onto the scene writing tremendous, powerful scores, get pigeonholed in such a lousy genre -- and why will no one bring him on for better assignments?
