He didn't have it attached to his helmet,it was just hanging on one side. Was it supposed to be that way or did Lucas forget to say "Hey,fix that!"?

That's Pops, the old man. He's cooler than the other pilots, and he has to show that.

Helmet straps are uncomfortable. I'd leave it unsnapped myself.

What good is your helmet if you get blown out of the heavens by a TIE? So yeah, why not leave it undone?

What good's a helmet if you get blown away in space?

Heh! Yeah, noticed that about the chin strap.
It's kinda like wearing a hat at a rakish angle or something... ;) He's too cool for school.

Yeah... those pilots at the battle of Yavin are the coolest rebels ever.
We see the beginning of Wedge's glorious career, the coolest mustache in the universe: Biggs, great helmets and I just love the way they talk to each other before and during the battle.

When Vader enters the battle with his wingmen (DS-61-2 & DS-61-3 if I am not mistaken) the greatest space battle ever becomes even better. There is no way Lucas can top this spacebattle.

    I just love that battle.

"Just hold them off for a few seconds while I re-attach this."

Those motorcycle helmets in reality, probaly would do more harm than help. But perhaps if something hit their X-wing, and caused it to spin out of control, his head would be bonking all over the place, need a good head to fly an X-wing.
