'Art of Episode I'. Concept art was by Terry Whitlock(sp?). And nudity is gritty because it's [Dr. Evil pinky to mouth] ...naughty.

That frame actually took quite a bit of work to get it because most frames in that shot had some part of Jar Jar blurry due to movement (specially the eyes).

I like him, but he could have been a bit more toned down in tpm. He can be a bit annoying there sometimes.:D

Definitely. He can be very annoying, but I don't hate him. There are worse characters, in other series. Jar Jar was probably a scapegoat for the general dislike toward the PT at the time. Even now that's probably a reason for the issue, but it may just be the 'in' thing to dislike him. His voice and speech patterns don't help matters.

Yeah, Jar Jar was probably just a scapegoat, or it may just be the "in thing" to dislike him. People just went along with everyone else and didn't give him a chance. People didn't form their own opinion, they just followed the negative Star Wars fans.

Anything but people actually hating Jar Jar. That can't be true, there has to be some conspiracy involved. That must be it.

I'm a huge PT fan, but I feel the way about Jar Jar in TPM that I do about the Ewoks in ROTJ- those are my least favorite characters in my least favorite movies of each trilogy.

I didn't mind the Jar Jar of the second 2 movies, as he was in them for a limited amount of time, and wasn't so over the top as in TPM.

But as with the Ewoks, I found him to be out of place, and too far into the kid-friendly arena. Yes, SW is meant to be kid-accessible. But nonetheless, it felt to me (as I've said before) like taking Disney characters (e.g. Donald Duck) and placing them in the middle of a PG/PG-13 sci-fi, just out of place.

Certainly though, as with other sentient-being CGI characters, you have to give them credit for a massive artistic accomplishment in TPM; that is much different than trying to do non-sentient CGI creatures (e.g. Jurassic Park), there is no denying that this was ground breaking work.

I figure GL intended Jar Jar to be one of the most beloved of characters in his saga and the general dislike of the character was not expected at all. I assume there were quite a few things about TPM that Uncle George thought would be received very differently. I don't know if that's true at all, but it really seemed like that was the case as I watched the 'Making of Ep. 1' doc on the original DVD.

Gritty is a term that is used to describe something that is serious and dark, in tone and context. So much so that you feel the need to shower afterwards, because of how it is.

To be fair, not many of today's audiences have seen the types of films featuring that caricature. That's why I recommend watching "Ghostbreakers". It is the single best representation of that caricature, that is still seen and available.

Those people are idiots. The Neimoidian race was based off the Duros from ANH and they hardly looked like fish.

I was twenty one when I saw TPM, in 99. I was right in the age bracket and didn't find it offensive at all. I don't know if bitter is the right label.

No one is saying that there wasn't legitimate hate for Jar Jar. But the reasons for said hate is in question, often because of bandwagoning.

"What's up with Jar Jar Binks?"

Good question; we can only guess. He's probably still alive in the GFFA, wandering around in the swamps of Naboo, waiting for a major character in the Sequel Trilogy to randomly pick him up again so that once more, he can humor us all with his unrivaled slapstick...

    Won't that be fun? [face_clown]

Man, Jar Jar and the Star Wars fandom would have a lot of catching up to do...

I expect Jar Jar to make a cameo in the ST but will be broken since he was the one who brought up the Chancellor getting Emergency Powers and the Clone Wars to rage on and the Empire to come into existence and he'll blame himself for all of the massacres and what not.

It really depends on the life-span of a Gungan. i don't think they'd jump at the opportunity to bring Jar Jar back, as I think they are aware that fans do not like him too much...

@Mr. K , I remember from the pre-TPM days some commentary about Lucas introducing Jar-Jar as a new sidekick character, sort of the Chewbacca of the prequels. Obviously that didn't work, as I have never heard of anyone disliking Chewie. Not saying it doesn't happen, but he's not the butt of jokes about bad characters the way Jar-Jar has been.

@darth-sinister : The issue is that assuming that people who hate Jar-Jar must be "bandwagoning" is assuming that people who hate him, could not have possibly come to that opinion on their own--they could only be "followers" who just want to hang out with the "hip" crowd and they would love Jar-Jar if they would only think for themselves. That insinuation is pretty offensive. I've seen it made about people who dislike other characters as well, Jar-Jar is hardly unique here.

I don't understand analyzing why someone hates a fictional character anyway. They aren't real people who are going to get their feelings hurt, and opinions on a work of art don't have to be justified to people who disagree.

My opinion is that in the midst of a rather serious and non-comedic movie, you've got this character (Jar Jar) that is clearly out of place in the fact that almost every line spoken by him is comedic. It seems out of place and not well thought out. Probably taken individually, and out of context of the movie, the lines are funny and entertaining, however reinserted into the events of the movie his pieces seem oddly inserted. I think that overall Jar Jar takes a bad rap though, I think he becomes the focus for alot of people who have other issues with the movie but whom use Jar Jar as the focal point for their list of complaints with the movie as a whole...

This. It wouldn't surprise me if Disney mandated that he not be included. They know competition is going to be stiff in 2015, and I don't see them being as stubborn about this sort of issue as George Lucas might have been.

Including Jar Jar or not isn't going to make much a of a difference to kids. He wasn't in the OT, and kids seemed to enjoy Star Wars just fine. I don't really see him as a necessity.

I remember a parody in late 1999/early 2000 which included the line, "Mesa called Jar-Jar Binks. Mesa comic relief."

I wonder why so many fans poured such a great deal of hatred toward a character was basically clumsy and sometimes annoying. Why hatred? What does that say about people who hated Jar Jar so much?

Well, you know how overly harsh people can be.
It doesn't make them bad people, but if Jar Jar is the
reason they hated the movie, there's a good chance they'll hate Jar Jar too.

I've heard of people hating Threepio as a "comic relief" character, in a similar fashion.

I don't think the OP was assuming that all the people who hate Jar Jar do it for that reason. Just some of them, which is a view on the topic that I share. Confirmity is not something the OP came up with, it's a filed of a science called social psychology and reality. Ignoring these things is no less ignorant than assuming all the people hated him for those reasons.
Given the information that Jar Jar was more famous than the now beloved Darth Mail when the movie was originally released (that should be the most scientific observation we can have: http://www.gallup.com/poll/3757/public-gives-latest-star-wars-installment-positive-rave-reviews.aspx) and has now become to some kind of hate porn for many people on the internet supports the idea imo.

My oponion: Jar Jar is just an integral part of the TPM. He didn't bother me a bit when I first watched the film. He was just part of the film and that was fine for me. Being honest, I'd say his contribution to TPM alone was more integral and meaningfiul than anything Chewbacca ever did (which was basically flying).
Jar Jar has become slightly annoying for me in repeated viewings in very few of his scenes (Watto's shop, the end battle), but no big deal.

Without Jar Jar and the role he plays with Amidala, TPM would lose its essence. The journey of the Naboo and the Gungans is personified in these two characters. Taking away Jar Jar would just erase that. Never had a problem with his voice, either.

Jar Jar is Jar Jar and - for better or worse - has probably become one of the most well known Star Wars characters to date. That's something.

I really don't get the jar jar hate, and the proof that it makes no sense is that when the movie came out people laughed at him in the theater's.

tl; dr. Don't care. You like Jar-Jar? Great.

But some people don't, and the attempts at Internet armchair psychoanalysis of fans who don't share your opinion of a character, say more about the people conducting the attempted psychoanalysis than it does about the people who disagree about the character.

People who disagree with you can't just disagree with you? They have to be "wrong" or co-opting some sort of "mentality"? Really?

How about they just viewed the character or film differently than you?

This is hardly unique to Jar-Jar, I've seen these type statements regarding other characters as well, and I find it ridiculous at best, meddlesome and arrogant at worst.

As I said, Jar-Jar didn't really bother me, but if some people found him so annoying that they can't watch TPM...maybe that's all there is to it and maybe it's really none of your business.
