Whats up with the Emperor's face in ESB? During the hologram transmission with Vader at the asteroid field, his face looks very strange. Not the same as it did in ROTJ.

It looks as if he's wearing goggles or something. Anyone know anything about this?

One more thing, awwww man i don't remember now. Great.

The Emperor in ROTJ is all Ian McDiarmid in old age make-up. The Emperor's face in ESB is a composite of different parts plus the voice of Clive Revill.

I believe the eyes of Palpatine in ESB are those of an oranutan. No joke.

The Emperor's hologram is a woman's face with chimpanzee eyes composited on.

That is correct. And the face is actually a woman.

shouldn't GL have fixed this on the SE?

I mean it totally breaks the continuity. Well he is an expert for that.

" I mean it totally breaks the continuity."

Not at all. The hologram was sent during the time when the Empire had cable. Later on, they upgraded to DirectTv. :D

No, that is not a break in continuity. That's a misuse of the term. If that's a break in continuity, so is having both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor play Obi-Wan.

I actually kinda like the effect. It really foreshadows for the audience. It would be interesting to see the effect on people who watch the saga in episodic order, when they see Palps and think "Damn, what happened to him!?"

Of course, realistically, Palps wouldn't be trying to show his "spooky" face to Vader in his private quarters, but considering that he keeps Vader on a short leash, and the hologram is huge and 10 feet over Vader's head, it would make sense to attribute this image as fulfilling Palp's need to be grandiose and threatening in front of his apprentice.

Either way, keep it. (You hear that, Lucas? Keep it!!!)

That was before the plastic surgeons got onto him... and even then they couldn't make that much of an improvement. :p

StarWars.com has the following to say:

The Emperor first appeared on film in The Empire Strikes Back. He was played by an old woman wearing prosthetic makeup, with chimpanzee eyes superimposed in post-production into darkened eye sockets in order to create a truly unsettling image. Palpatine's voice was provided by Clive Revill for Empire. For Jedi and all subsequent films, Palpatine was played by actor Ian McDiarmid.

    :)

That could be Palpatine's "public" image, somewhat similar to the end of The Wizard Of Oz.

Not like his "private" image is much better. ;)

I think Palpatine/Sidious would have been better off had his face remained hidden underneath that hood. I was looking at a photograph of Sidious, and I think his character is more interesting if he appears as a mysterious Sith Lord, rather than the Emperor.

yeah, it's an old Indian woman with Chimp eyes layered on in post production. I think it's a bit creepy, i don't mind it. I don't mind the way it is, but if they had just kept the eyes in shadow instead of using chimp eyes, it would've been fine. Originally, Alec Guinnes was supposed to play both Kenobi and the Emperor.

I think there might be a legal reason why they can't change the Emperor in Empire Strikes Back, but I don't know if it's true or not. Can anybody enlighten me?

Where does that information come from? I've never heard it in my life.

If that were the case, we wouldn't have the SE's, would we? ;)

The point being... Lucas is free to make any changes that he sees fit to make. Why should the monkey-face be the sole exclusion?

(It would be nice if people would read for intent, rather than word-for-word.)

I like the Emperor in ESB. He's (she's)creepy, he's scary, he's got chimp eyes. They should have used the old chimpy woman in Return of the Jedi.

    Or the six-breasted chick!!! [face_laugh]

    "Chicks don't have six breasts---do they?" ;)
    __________

Chick-"Give in to your anger. Strike him down and take his place by my side, and milk me like the bad farm boy that you are!"

Luke-"But I worked with moisture evaporators!"

Chick-"Then you shall die, young Jedi!"
    [Smothers him]

    Luke-"hmmmphf"

    (Sorry....)
