I'd take a Y-Wing with my own personal MODs. First I'd take out the ion cannons and replace them with a turret mounted warhead launcher carrying 12 Arakyd 3t3 missiles with miniature proton warheads. Between the rear thruster control jets would be a thermal detonator bombing chute carrying 16 detonators. With those I could clear landing zones of debris and people, and also offer a suprise to any enemy pilot following to close. Finally I'd put an R6 in back and use the power normally used for ion cannons to power a sensor jammer taken off an A-Wing.

I'm taking J9's route, but using an X-Wing. This is pre-NJO when I first wrote this.

Expand length by half meter, height by quarter meter. Behind R2 unit socket, a retractable swivel mount Ion cannon that pilot or droid can control (Ions don't kill, thus Droids can use them). Enhance speed and manuerablility to roughly TIE advanced. Upgraded sensor system, allowing for use as a recon fighter. 8 proton torps, instead of 6. And for emergency evasion, A SLAM overdrive off of a Missile boat.

Now, ain't that a sweet sounding fighter?

Y-Wing. Slow but has a punch and can take a four day Ass whoopin.
