When a Character Looks Like Someone

There are and always have been resemblances between EU characters and current actors in Star Wars comics. Robert Downey Jr., Jack Nicholson, Ed Harris, River Phoenix and others I must've missed. It was when I was rereading Claws of the Dragon that I was so struck with how much Jariah Syn looks like actor, Gary Dourdan from CSI and Alien: Resurection that I had to ask. I'm quite new to comics but Jan Duursema is really one of my favorite artists in the medium. I have two questions really. For that photo realistic feel of Jan's work or anyone else's what kind of templates would an artist need to create Cade to Syn to anyone in panel after panel? Also what happens if some actor recognizes how much they look like someone?

 

I noticed the same thing. Mark Hamill looks exactly like Luke Skywaler.

But seriously, I think artists use actors as reference when designing thei characters. It was said that Albert Einstein was one of the bases for Yoda I believe in the Epire of Dreams documentary.

 

Sometimes they do. Syn and Moff Russ are both based on real actors.

I have more than a passing resemblance to the following depiction of Face:

Shouldn't this go into the Lit Casting call?

 

I think it's more of a "who are the comic images based from" not a "who should play whom" thread.

 

Antares Draco is a spitting image of the villain from "A Knight's Tale" IMO..

 

I think a lot of comic artists use the likenesses of celebs...or at least seem to.

And a lot use photoreferencing. Though it's my understanding that one isn't supposed to copy exactly, just use it as an aid for getting shadows, proportions, etc.

 

At least it isn't Greg Land drawing SW, he seems to have no shame.

 

What of all the artist renditions from Union? I know I saw Tommy Lee Jones in there.

 

Jack Nicholson's in there, too.

 

And Bruce Willis. And Steve Buscemi. And Harrison Ford - wait, that one's not surprising.

 

Surprisingly Mark Hamil was absent though . . .
