Now I thought that Vader had a revolutionary special Tie fighter in ANH. Watching ROTJ last night, the rebel fleet jumps into hyperspace fighters and all. Vader has a one of a kind special ship and 4 -5 years later the rebellion has the same technology on all of their old dirty beat-up fighters? Hmmm.

The starfighters used by the Rebellion and the Empire reflect their political mentalies. TIEs MUST have a large mothership near by if they want conduct extended operations. The Rebels, however allow much more flexibility it starfighter operations because their ships are equipped with HDs. Also the around the time of the building of the Death Star, the Incom X-wing design team defected to the Rebellion and brought severa prototype X-wings with them.

Darth Vader's TIE was unique because it had Hyperdrive--which made it unique for a TIE Fighter. The Empire builds fighters which are cheap and efficient. TIEs aren't feared for their capabilities, but for their numbers. They can build several TIEs sans shields, hyperdrives, life-support or cockpit gravity at a fraction of the cost to build one X-Wing. Hyperdrives on a starfighter isn't Advanced Technology in the least--heck, N1 Starfighters and Jedi Starfighters have hyperdrive (albeit the latter requires a special extension.)

Yeah, hyperdrive seems to be the norm rather than the exception. The Naboo starfighters must also have hyperdrive, how else did they get to Coruscant in AOTC?

TIEs seem to be the exception rather than the rule, extremely small, extremely cheap, no fuel, no air, just a box with solar panels, ion engines, and guns. Vader's TIE retains the more complete equipment of a Jedi starfighter crossed with the integrated hyperdrive of a Sith interceptor, or so I surmise (I don't read SW tech books).

Since the Ties and the pilots are disposable. They must be mass produced and cheap. There is no loss of life in the Empries eyes when any clone dies. He is a tool to enforce control.

The Republic's fighters were all hyperdrive equipped, Vader had the only TIE at the time with a hyperdrive.
