    Between TPM and AOTC Shmi gives him his rusty coverings,

    During the Clone Wars he gets his gold coverings (as seen in the CW cartoons)

    he is given his gold plating during the 3rd season of the clone wars
    it' because he's in padme's service and he must look presentable
