When I left you, I was but the learner.

Eh, didn't ObiWan leave Anakin to burn and die? If that's not it's meaning can someone think up what it is?

Anakin was in no position of moving, even less of "leaving" ObiWan.

The novel says different. Check it out, and you'll see it makes more sense than ANH-AOTC.

Me thinks Vader means it like this see:

    We mentally left each other
    our ways parted
you were no longer my mentor
    I left the Jedi Order

    ... take your pick. [face_peace]

Leaving does not always mean physically walking away.

This might also be part of the reason why George included all the "not a Master!?" stuff in RotS

When Anakin and Obi duel in ROTS,he loses because he's too emotional and confident in himself at the time. He's too ignorant and headstrong to realize Obi Wan was gonna merk him if he jumped.

Vader realizes this many years later, that he couldn't just accept Obi Wan was still the Master. But now that they meet again,he's more prepared.

    The novel says:

"You were once my teacher," Vader admitted, "and I learned much from you. But the time of learning has long passed, and I am the master now."

Worded differently, but it says the same thing.

He's basically saying "Yeah back in the day you were on top and all, but this is my time now." I think it's exactly why all that "Not a master?!" stuff was inculded in ROTS, to tie into that line from ANH. In his mind, at that point, he IS finally the Master.

    You're a plothole! [face_skull]

You guys are totally ruining a great quote. who cares if Vader said "I".

Didn't most people always assume Vader meant "left" in the sense of becoming a Sith anyway?
"...who was an apprentice of mine, until he turned to evil."
    Cmon people
