I'd be happiest with one empty teaser, a 60-second main trailer, and 3 or 4 simple TV spots. It's Star Wars, people will show up so long as they know there's a movie being released.

I remember downloading the TPM QuickTime trailer the whole day on dial-up, to endlessly enjoy it in the full glory of the total fifteen pixels it had.

Very few films are worth my money so I wont be seeing any of these films in the theater. So I won't see a trailer until it's on youtube or tv.

They just released the first Tomorrowland teaser trailer, 8 months before release:

I'm thinking now they might do the same for Ep VII and attach the first teaser to Age of Ultron.

So that's the other early trailer exemption for Disney's 2015 lineup ( as per the NATO 150 day policy). The first was Inside Out. I think you guys can put any hope of an early teaser to bed.

That is a full trailer, NOT a teaser. A teaser is like 30 seconds maybe a little longer.

I think we may see it with the movie Into the Woods. It's a way to bring in crowds for a Disney film almost no one has heard of yet.

The National Association of Theater Owners doesn't differentiate. Let it go. No trailer (teaser or not) until late Spring or Summer.

I know this is totally unrealistic. But I don't want any trailers or even posters revealing any official imagery for the film before it opens. It'll make it that much more exciting on the day audiences first go to the cinema.

I hope that when the marketing machine does eventually kick in, they don't do the usual trailer thing that happens these days and give away the entire plot.

I remember this clearly. It went up on starwars.com, and fortunately I was in college with a fast network. So, it didn't take me long to download it...but I must have watched that trailer a hundred times in a row that night.

That is a day long remembered. I wasn't an internet person back then at all. I was 13 and only used Internet for guitar tabs and slow porn (don't judge, didn't you go through puberty?). The trailer caught me by surprise on E! News, I tuned in regularly to that AWFUL show for Star Wars news, every day they had a little tidbit, and then all of a sudden Steve Kmetko announced the trailer. I was floored because it was totally unexpected and despite what anyone thinks about TPM now (specially myself), that trailer looked as if we were going to get the best Star Wars movie ever. My brother who was 21 at the time and a casual fan ("Jedi is the one with Jabba and the ewoks, right?") said to me "Boy, this one's gonna be even better than Empire for sure!". Boy, how wrong we were! Good times.

Yes I am aware of the irony. But there's something about the dubious validity of spoilers and rumours that makes me interested in reading them, because they are not official or set in stone. I by no means know for certain that Luke is a cybernetic villain, who is sought out by Han Solo and some young heroes, but it's certainly within the realm of possibility. I'm okay with reading 'potential spoilers' but the minute I see something that is officially put out for marketing and promotion, the mystery will be gone and I'll know how it's going to be.

In the end I'll probably end up looking at trailers and posters etc, but I hope they are done in such a way that it keeps the audience somewhat in the dark about the direction of the story. Too many trailers these days are like a condensed version of the film that tells you exactly how the plot will unfold. When I was a kid trailers for these sorts of films pulled you into the idea of the setting and the character, without giving away anything more than a basic premise, which left you wanting to find out more.

A mixture of footage from the OT & Episode VII, like they did with ROTS. We'll probably see a cloaked figure, but not his/her face.

Probably Binary Sunset playing while we get a glimpse of the Falcon, Tatooine, a new planet, a TIE fighter, etc. Any character glimpses will probably culminate with Luke.

Depends how nostalgia heavy they want to go. If they really are drawing on this Lightsaber idea then both Anakin and Luke wielding the shared saber and then it being discovered by Kira would be the connective tissue as it's was Anakin's then Anakin as Vader then Luke's vs Vader.

    If that idea is happening.

It will be heavy in nostalgia. You will see Han, Luke, Leia, Chewie, the Droids all over it. Plus the xwings and falcon. I imagine it will also introduce us to the new villain.

I think that it will start with nostalgia to draw folks in and then veer into the new. I have a vision of not seeing Luke until the very last shot of the trailer where we will see him ignite his saber.

I don't see Luke's face being in the teaser trailer or any trailer. I think they want his reveal to be special when he's finally unveiled in the theatre.

"Episode VII is the most disappointing thing since Episode III. Who wants a Pizza Roll?"

Seriously, though, I fully expect they'll manage to include a clip of one of the returning OT characters saying something along the lines of "Just like old times..." or whatever other line they can cull from the script that words as both an in-movie line and a nod to the audience about SW (and the cast) returning.
Aside from that, we'll get some quick and somewhat vague shots of spaceships flying around, which won't really tell us a whole lot, and at least one lightsaber igniting. Then there'll be a line from a character that gives a sense of importance to the whole thing (something that sounds foreboding), followed by quick shots of several characters looking frightened, and then a shot of the villain (perhaps shrouded in shadows so we can't see him/her too clearly). Then the title. Then the release date.
