I was on a website yesterday where someone had a strange idea about the Clone Wars.

It's long been theorized that Obi-Wan was a clone, since his name, like R2 and 3PO, can be shortened to number form: OB1. But the part that I thought was strange was that someone thought that Alec Guinness was the face of the Emperor in Empire, and thus theorized that the Clone Wars were about Obi-Wan fighting his evil clone.

The flaw is, that Alec Guinness never played Palpatine! That wasn't his voice, nor was it his face. It was an old woman. So where did the Guinness=Palpatine idea ever pop up?

the only thing i can come up with is that when we see the Emperor in ESB, besides extras, the only other person we've seen where that type of robe with the hood is Obi-Wan.. so i can see a connection there.. the other thing is that in ESB, Obi-Wan's ghost form looks similar to the holographic image that shows the Emperor.. so i guess i can see how someone would make the connection, but then again the Emperor's face in ESB looks nothing like Obi-Wan's so yeah lol

It was probably some fanboy who decided Obi-Wan was actually evil and got a large following of people believing him. :p

It may have come from Timothy Zahn. His original idea for the villain from the Thrawn Trilogy that he wrote was a clone of Obi-Wan. Lucas vetoed that idea, so the villain became Joruus C'baoth.

Wasn't there an EU book where a group of Force users were trained to believe that Obi-Wan Kenobi was the most evil man in the universe?

I've heard the theory of Obi-wan being a clone, but not a clone of Sidious.

    That's just flat out ridiculous.

    (I'm a poet, and didn't know it. :p )

Technically, "Artoo" and "R2" aren't pronounced identically, either. One is a single word while the other requires a pause between the letter and the number.

Just to play devil's advocate. :p

I still think that this theory is true, it explains how he was friends with both anoakin and darth vader

Right, but one was good and the other wasn't. ;)

I don't think Palpy was really friends with Anakin when he was young. He was manipulating Anakin into trusting him.

I've never heard that theory before

That's one of the stupidest things i've ever heard, I have no idea how anyone came up with it

actually , i believe that if you look at the credits on ESB it is Sir Alec standing in as the Emperor, that is wih some cheap make up and face putty, but i am pretty sure that it is him. This is not to say that there is a connection between OBi and Palp[atine, just to say the actor puled double duty.
    but i could be wrong

    Obi Wan=Palpatine?

    Yeah,right....

Something to support Ben being a clone though.

When Vader kills him,Ben goes "poof".
Yet when Qui Gon bought it in TPM,his body remained...

Nope, Clive Revill played the Emperor in ESB.

Just his voice. The face was an old woman's, and the eyes were a chimpanzee's.

There's a thread about it in the TPM forum somewhere.

qui-gonn had the preform the dramatic "obiwan you must train him, he is the one who will bring balance to the force" if ben laid in a pile of himself and luke ran over there, darth would have turned him into skywalker stew. i imagine obi wan talking to his former master in episode 3, calling himself a faliure and dancing away to tatooine, beyond the dune sea.

Yoda must be a clone then too, as he went "poof" when he died. Maybe Qui Gon was a clone since he didn't go poof! ;)

The Obi-Wan clone theory has been around since the late 70's, early 80's. I believe I've even seen it mentioned in the old archived use.net boards from that time.

As to Alec playing the Emperor in ESB, that's a new one to me. I would think that it's easy enough to disprove considering he's not credited with the role in the credits.
