I actually like films that show a bit of complexity in how sometimes politics skews good intentions and sometimes instead creates bad actors.

We were earlier talking about the republic/imperial treaty and its similarities to Versailles, how the punitive aspects of Versailles created a victim and wronged and betrayed mentality among the german people that set the stage for the rise of radicals. It also weakened the legitimacy of the Weimar from the outset.

So, the Empire wasn't ever really decisively defeated. They were beaten at Jakku but then a treaty was singed, stopping the conflict.

This points to what was likely the Empire suing for peace.

So the remnants of the Empire either withered away post treaty and disarmament or fled into the unknown regions and reorganized itself as the FO.

In many ways the treaty led to the FO.

That is an unintended consequence of that peace.

I would like it if maybe the Imperial remnant, if there is such a thing, has to ally with the resistance to beat the FO.

That would be cool. It would also echo the Cold War.

I expect the cronies/regional governors of Emperor Palpatine amassed quite a bit of wealth during his reign, and want to turn back the clock. Perhaps Benicio del Toro will be playing one of these loyalists in Episode 8.

The Republic seemingly created the FO by banishing the Empire to the Outer Rim, then deciding to demilitarize their own forces and not keep constant spy on the movements of the Empire.

When you engage in imperialism, you add resources with every conquest. So it isn't a case of needing money to fund the thing start to finish, you just need to get started.

Starkiller Base is a planet converted into a weapon. Sure, it's expensive, but considering they have so many Stormtroopers, which are conspired at a very young age, it's clear they have control of at least a few hundred systems out of the thousands in the Galaxy. Also, it's very likely they had very cheap labor, as the labor force was likely made up of slaves.

Ultimately, they are a newly named organization formed out of some corner of what must've been the remnant of the Empire.

I'm sure Palps had lots of backup resources, stockpiles, private projects and investments to fund the Empire, and in the chaos surrounding the fall of the Empire, and the forming of the New Republic, some pieces fell to both sides, with the Imperials having a better heads-up on where the good stuff was. Starkiller base concept might have already been conceived pre ROtJ, much like we see Death Star plans in AotC.

Guessing the First Order controls some region of space outside of the New Republic and as such are the government in that part of the galaxy and are funded like all other govts are

They're whats left of the Imperials and those that supported them. Imperial loyalists would have to either remain in the New Republic and be forced into a new lifestyle as outlined by the victor or they'd have to flee to lands still under Imperial control. The treaties the Imperials signed is basically like the Versailles Treaty the Germans signed after WWI which led to the national socialists under Hitler being elected and the rise of the 3rd Reich(Reich means realm but often translated to German Empire). The New Republic comes off as Weimar Republic combined with the League of Nations. The Unknown Regions could be rich in natural resources which they sell. Am sure even those that may of supported Alliance now feel betrayed by Mom Mothma and her politics and the Senate seems to be in the state that existed during the TPM and the events that led up to it. The First Order were originally called Neo-Imperials and thats is really what they are.

I, for one, was very happy that any talk of trade/money/taxation/commerce/funding was left out of the mix.

It does mention in the Visual Dictionary their human labor force is complemented by a sizable droid maintenance one.

    This is probably the answer.

The Empire secretly explored and colonised a lot of unknown worlds after Palapatine's ascension, and it was on these worlds where the First Order really begun even though to most if the Galaxy (until the end of Honsian) they were just a barely struggling by rump state. No-one knew about these systems and I assume the First Order owned and operated mines and other methods of extracting and exploiting the natural resources for themselves. That's how they managed to build their secret war machine (which they are no legally allowed to have under the treaty), including Starkiller base, which is itself a world in the Unknown Regions.

You don't need everything explained especially if its superfluous to the story and characters.

They really did mention this in the novel and the Visual Dictionary. The FO reorganized in the wild regions explored secretly in the latter years of the Empire but pre-Jakku and pre-treaty.

So the FO leadership was aware they could use this cosmic wilderness to regroup and prepare a counterstrike.
