I liked the Thrawn Trilogy, by Tim Zahn. It consists of HEIR TO THE EMPIRE, DARK FORCE RISING, and THE LAST COMMAND.

Most fans agree that they are good books, and they single handedly revitalized SW lit. If you don't like 'em, don't be discouraged, there are alot of authors and each brings something to the table.

I'd say one of the X-Wing books, actually, since Truce at Bakura is **** and Thrawn Trilogy is a while off from ROTJ.

    EDIT- Watch it.

Despite our Ive_Got_Two_Legs rather colorful comments, start with The Truce At Bakura if you want to stick with the timeline, if not than I would go with the Thrawn Trilogy as well. I can't really think of a good reason why though.

I've gotta second going with the Truce at Bakura. You can't get any closer to the end of ROTJ than the very next day.

Yeah, Truce is a solid choice.

If not that then Zorba the Hutt's Revenge!!~!

    Oh you're just too precious!

If he does take my joking advice, one of two things will happen:

    A) He'll never read Star Wars literature again
    B) Every book he picks up from then on out will be solid gold

    I'm gunning for B.

I'd say The Thrawn Trilogy because it was written before any other post-ROTJ EU had come out (besides the comics which I believe weren't canon back then), and thus you need no prior knowledge. Plus it's a better read then Bakura.

I'd say the Thrawn Trilogy too, consisting of Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command. They're not my favorite books, but I consider them a very, very good place to start post-ROTJ.
