ST Where was Snoke during the OT

So, Snoke seems old. Older than 40 or something. I understand that the Rule of Two states that there can only be two siths ruling at once. But where was he during Sidious and Vader's ruling? How did he take control of the Empire after the Emperor died? Did the Emperor know about him?

Hiding in the shadows, exploited the conflict for his own ends, and gathering his strength. He just waited until Sheev and Vader were dead in order to do so more openly.

Power abhors a vacuum. So with most of the Imperial leadership either dead of defeated, the time was ripe for Snoke to step in and take over.

As a 46 year old i can confirm that my face has become more snoke-like than I'd like to admit

 

Palpatine could mask himself from the Jedi. Perhaps Snoke could do the same.

 

It's a big galaxy and I also think he has oviously been biding his time. Am I the only person that thinks there is going to be a twist with Snoke? I just get the feeling that he is not just going to be the Emperor Mk 2.

 

Not at all far-fetched that he was hiding out in the Unknown Regions all that time.

I think that Snoke is something Luke awakened or something that the Empire found at the edge of the galaxy. I don't think he was simply sitting around and twiddling his thumbs while Vader and the Emperor were running the galaxy.

He probably didn't want to attract the attention of Palpatine/Vader, so after the Empire's downfall he took the opportunity to start his own rise to power, and saw Kylo was essentially the next Anakin in being strong in the Force.
