BB-8 but robots aren't really supposed to be emotional in the first place.

Droids in SW are supposed to be, from an OOU perspective.

It was hard for R2 to do anything in TFA. He was asleep for most of the movie. I voted for bb-8.

BB-8. He can tilt his head down when he's sad. I love R2 but its mostly a emotion through sound thing. BB8 has that plus.

BB-8, though it comes at the cost of being more try-hard than R2. For example, the constant head dropping and low "cute" sad noises he makes.

BB-8 has a distinct advantage in that it can alter its' "posture" more easily as well as use it's warblebleeps to convey emotional content. BB-8 can "hang its' head" to convey sadness, for example.

R2 is generally relegated to spinning it's dome, warblebleeping, and occasionally rocking back and forth a bit. Still very effective, but not quite as effective as BB-8 in that regard.

I also think, as such things go, BB-8 has a more expressive "face". Which is to say a face that can be more easily shot in different ways to give an emotional tinge.

I can't pick. I empathize with them both. R2D2 is more of an adult, though :p

In TFA, definitely BB-8. But overall, that's a really tough choice. I might still have to give the edge to R2 because of knowing him for all these years and seeing him emote in six movies. And even though they're droids, they only communicate in beeps, etc., and they do not have true "faces", these guys really do convey emotions amazingly well.

OK, I just edited it to add "overall" to the poll question. :)

R2 has been through some serious stuff. Sees Anakin go from Padawan to Jedi Knight to Sith Lord and back and at the same time sees Luke go from Padawan to Knight and I assume Master. I always felt a good bit of sadness to R2 even though he was just a droid, whereas BB8 is like that kid who tries to be everyones friend (which also isn't a bad thing).

Well the other thing to consider is R2 has a more extensive resume than BB8. They're both pretty juvenile in their first outings.

I love R2D2's scream. I love BB-8's thumbs up. Don't make me choose.

If we are measuring emotion based on just TFA then BB8 if we consider whole Saga R2 hands down

I hate to turn my back on my boy R2... but BB-8 conveyed what (s)he was saying with the beeps much better than R2.

    BB8

I grew up with the OT, R2 & 3PO are classic droids but they totally need to be nothing much more than background noise going forward. BB8 can do so much more to interact and at a faster pace too, he can go places they couldn't. Without ridiculous CGI flying boosters anyway.

R2D2 grew on me over time...ironically when I got a dog I started to relate to him more ?? :D

I loved BB8 straight away so...

    I don't know - probably even.

My nephew laughed at BB-8 and clearly "got" him, but was clear that he considered R2-D2 superior.

I consider him an expert on the matter, because he is 5 years old.

I think they are both fantastic feats of design, puppeteering and sound design. But R2 will always be my favorite. But BB-8 is his little buddy! Did not vote. I think they are equally effective.
