    There's no contest. TPM.
    First...I feel exceptionally old compared to some and I used to feel very young here/collector boards.

    The hype was ridiculous, you couldn't turn on the tv, or radio, browse the new or see a magazine stand without something Star Wars related, and the infant version of many fan sites were just popping with information daily. That was just for the actual film, the tie-ins were also everywhere. so basically it invaded for nearly a year, until the home release and the eventual fading these cycles go through. I always felt the Special editions set up the hype, and TPM rode and escalated the wave. Everyone was talking about it....even those fed up with it.

    TFA was definitely muted, not even a shadow of what 1999 was like.

    TPM was far more hyped than TFA and hype in 1980 was incomparable to what hype is in the world of the internet.
