Obviously those who follow Joseph Campbell's hero's journey are the best ones. Right? Isn't it the first rule of fiction that your protagonist has to learn and change through the course of a story? Of course, Back to the Future, whose script is used at film schools as a template for the perfect script, with all of the setups accounted for and resolved by the end, has a protagonist that flies in the face of this. The people around him all change for the better through his actions, but there's nothing wrong with him or his girlfriend. So, to be the maverick, I'm gonna go ahead and say Marty McFly is the best hero, nay, best character in all of fiction!

On an unrelated note, Back to the Future also commits another scriptwriting sin in having Doc utter insane amounts of exposition in the beginning of the movie, but no one cares or notices because it's Doc Brown and he made a time machine out of a freaking DeLorean.

Frodo, yes, and don't forget Sam. He's wonderful. :)

I love that Ghost shared Goliath and Elisa.

Sam is arguably a more selfless hero than Frodo, in that the Ring did not affect him as intensely because his innate nature is to give of himself. There are those who see Sam as the true hero of LOTR (the book, not necessarily the film, though there's a case to be made there as well).
