Demosthenes comes to mind (though he ultimately failed to convince the Greeks that Philip of Macedon was dangerous). Cicero would be another.

In all history? I don't think it's possible to say: not without being able to hear them speak.

Abraham Lincoln. He was more poet than statesman, and he was a very good statesman. If he had not been assasinated, the Reconstruction of this country after the Civil War would have gone much smoother.

And the South would not have been so alienated because it is doubtful he would have made them take the loyalty oath that his successor made them take.

Gotta go with that on the physicist front at least. Exceptional.

My vote on the sports athlete-front is Muhammad Ali.

    No one greater.

Abe was able to write great speeches, but by most accounts, he had a high, raspy voice that was unpleasant to listen to.

Also, I wonder if Lincoln didn't, if you'll excuse the expression, dodge a bullet by getting assassinated. Reconstruction would have been almost impossible for ANYONE to pull off, and I think Abe's reputation benefits from his going out at his post popular.

It turned out that Churchill lifted some of his great phrases from Hansard.

It's sort of amusing that the lion's share of all the candidates mentioned to date are: A)from the modern era and B)Western figures. That said, I suppose I won't buck the trend for now.

How about a discussion of what makes for a good orator, compared and contrasted with demagoguery. How about a discussion as to why you think a particular orator is the best?
