Who do you guys think are the 20 best characters?

Hi,

I really enjoyed thinking about my favourite characters and was prompted to join this forum by reading this topic. So my top 20 are (with the elements I see in them which attract me to them as characters):

1. Obi-Wan Kenobi - I'm not really sure why. Despite being female myself I relate more to Obi-Wan than any other character. I love Qui-Gon Jinn and Jango Fett perhaps more as characters but Obi-Wan has to come top for me because his are the eyes I see the story through. He just seems so good-hearted and genuine.

2. Jango Fett - Resourceful, strong and independent + great armour and ship.

3. Qui-Gon Jinn - For me he embodies the perfect Jedi. I am transfixed by his meditation in the face of Darth Maul's pacing in EP1.

4. Anakin Skywalker - Burning with passion he can little control he is a sensational character. Until he becomes Vader, and even after for a while he seems to carry the passion and the fear and the agony of adolescence very graphically for me.

5. Palpatine/Sidious - He is so cold, so ruthless, so scheming, so full of hate and bile, so utterly utterly Sith. It's brilliant.

6. Commander Cody - For me he's the perfect soldier and I love the way he looks.

7. Zam Wessell - Her frank honesty and a straight-forwardness of character when answering questions from Obi-Wan and Anakin as she dies really touches me.

8. Darth Maul - Fury and hatred personified - I'm attracted to the predatory instinct displayed in the character.

9. General Grievous - A Broken and twisted fighter.

10. Boba Fett - Clinical and pragmatic with a hint of vengeance.

11. Captain Typho - Father archetype - protector of Padme.

12. Zuccuss - I like the alien stillness of this mercenary.

13. Taun We - A beautiful, graceful being.

14. Kit Fisto - Joyful Jedi.

15. Leia - Strong, committed, caring leader in a female way. What I guess I mean here is that she displays leadership qualities which seem to have a distinctively female twist.

16. Chewbacca - I love the combination of technophile and animal rooted person in Chewbacca. I really enjoy the fact that we don't understand his speech but it is still so evocative that it convey's meaning without words. Chewie taps into my animal self and my technical self. He's great.

17. R2D2 - Jedi Droid. I've been wondering recently whether R2D2's droid brain is modelled on that of a Jedi. He often seems to come through when other's fail and certainly seems a lot more resourceful than other droids. Just a wild thought!

18. Gungan Warrior with Jar Jar at the surrender on Naboo (EP1) - Primitive, relaxed strength and integrity.

19. Han Solo - An extremely likable cowboy.

20. Regular Clone Trooper - I just love these ordinary cannon fodder guys.

I know not everyone will see the folk listed here like this (or indeed anything like this!) - what's here is just my own personal response to the characters. I've restricted my list to film characters only, although I have some real personal favourites in the EU too. Perhaps another time.

In thinking about all of this I've also wondered if the characters we like best might reflect parts of our own personalities in some way. I can certainly see themes in those characters I've chosen, for example - my wild animal self might be exemplified in Darth Maul, Chewbacca, the Gungan Warrior and to a lesser extent General Grievous (who reminds me of an injured animal). My controlled effective adult self might be represented by Jango Fett, Boba Fett, Commander Cody, the regular clone troopers. My moral, emotional and spiritual self might be represented by the Jedi. I don't know what the 'beautiful alien' I see in Taun We and to a lesser extent Zuccuss and San Wessell might related to but this question makes the whole thing seem more interesting.

For my list, I defined ?best? as having the most interesting personality, motivations, and actions. As you?ll note, few in my top twenty are from the films. This is not by design, but rather a preference for specific expanded universe sources and not a dislike of the films.
