    R2

He's been there since the beginning. Remove him completely from the storyline and the entire saga would play out differently and most of our heroes would definitely be dead.

    Qui-Gon.

Discovered the Chosen One. Led the Jedi on the path towards immortality; the encounter of The Five Priestesses foretold the fall of the Jedi, but informed Yoda there was still hope - by letting him hear his dying words.

R2-D2 who has a critical role in every movie.

E1: Saved everyone's life in the Naboo escape.

E2: Saves Padme in the Droid factory.

E3: Helped Anakin & Obi Wan rescue the chancellor.

E4: Kept the plans for the death star, rescued the heroes from being crushed in the garbage chute.

E5: Saved the heroes in Bespin by opening the locked door to the hanger. Saved them again by engaging the hyperdrive.

E6: Held Luke's light saber at Jabba's palace. He also convinced 3PO to surrender on Endor allowing the ewoks to surprise the imperials.

E7: Was the only one with Luke's whereabouts.

I vote for Yoda despite the overwhelming evidence for Palpatine. Even though Yoda is touted as the 'more powerful Jedi' and the fact stated clearly several times that 'The Dark Side is less powerful' than the light, he receives a proper can of whoop-&$# in Ep3. If it were not for Yoda, several key players would not have become Jedi. As the leader of the Jedi council and the one person put in a position of authority he completely fails to see through a fairly obvious plot by Palpatine. Then his total failure to flip 180 degrees and allow Anikin to be trained as a Jedi turns out to be the single worst decision in the history of the Galaxy. Palpatine Schmalpatine IMO, Yoda is the real cause and effect of the madness that ensues.' If Palpatine failed in his plot, Maul would have stepped up, then Dooku, then Grievous and on and on and on. Who can stop these morons? YODA. Does he lift a finger himself? only once to fight Palps, and somehow gives up at half-time.

(and to add insult to injury sticks around for 3 more episodes)

    Helga, the first midi-chlorian.

Without midi-chlorians, there's no life. Without life, there's no Force.

It is easily the most consistently high quality part of the saga. Every single movie has awesome music

    1. R2, as described why many times above.
    2. Sheev Palpatine.
-TPM: Sends the Trade Federation + Darth Maul to invade Naboo.
-AOTC: Again, he is chancellor and orders the clone army, he sends Dooku to Geonosis for the construction of the droid army and more. Controls both sides of the Clone Wars.
-ROTS: Yet again, gets himself kidnapped by Grievous and Dooku, gets Anakin and Obi-Wan to save him, Dooku is killed, Palpatine is discovered as a Sith lord, seduces Anakin to become a Sith, he commands Vader and the clones to destroy the Jedi, and makes him into the Vader we all know and love today.
-ANH: He is not seen or heard about in the movie, except for a possible mention, however he is behind the Death Star and thus the destruction of Alderaan.
-ESB: Appears on hologram, not much more happens.
-ROTJ: Tries to seduce Luke, traps the rebels into thinking that the Death Star is not operational, and then is destroyed by Vader.
    -TFA: Nothing.
-Other things: He is also responsible for the Empire, the Jedi purge, the Galactic Civil War and much more in the galaxy.
    3. Believe it or not, I'm going with Viceroy Nute Gunray. He starts with an invasion of Naboo, leading to trouble in the republic, then he is a big part of the separatists, leading to the clone army and thus the clone wars, because of that the Empire is created, the civil war is created and then also the fall of the Empire.

    Jar Jar. No, really!!!
    • If not for him QuiGon doesn't meet Anakin
    • Swings the momentum during the Battle of Naboo!
    • Empowers Palpatine to 'create' the Clone army
Ok, so I cant make a case that hes THE most important character in the SAGA, but hes pretty dang important.

There are many equally important characters in the saga. And a handful of protagonists.

    Luke.

Luke is the result of the events of the prequels trilogy. He encompasses Vader, Anakin, Padme, the old Jedi ideology, and is the personification of what a Jedi is.
It is unfortunate that JJ and Disney completely fckd his chaeacter.

#1: Anakin/Vader. The whole of the saga is because of him and his story. Rise/Fall/Legacy. All other story threads are linked to his in some way.

#2: R2-D2. He's everywhere saving everyone's butts. All the time.
