Well Bruce Banner turns into the Hulk, but does Clark Kent really turn into Superman? Does Peter Parker really turn into Spidey?

    WHO'S REALLY WEARING THE MASK???

I think it really depends on which aspect of the character has the biggest impact on the person.

Like I would say Clark Kent is the one wearing the mask as opposed to Superman, because Superman is the one that shapes who Clark is. IMO

Suggest the book, "Superman On The Couch" written by Danny Fingeroth. It delves into the secret identity of superheroes etc. It's a fascinating examination of the superhero.

By the way: There's Ka-el,Clark Kent then Superman. (Id-Ego-Super-ego).

I'd say it really depends on the individual Superhero. In Batman its usually said that Bruce Wayne is the alter Ego and Batman is his real personality. With Superman and Spiderman I'd say theres a little more crossover between the two identities.

You watched Kill Bill recently, didn't you? :p

Others are right. It really depends on the superhero. In my opinion, the majority seems to be that the hero is the alter-ego.

Robert Bruce Banner was abused as a child by his father, including watching his mother die. So when he changes into the Hulk, he does so because the gamma radiation causes him to shape shift. When he does that, one of his multiple personas takes ahold and it all depends on his mental state and which persona takes control. You've got Hulk-Prime who was the first persona. He would come out at night, but then he started to come out whenever Bruce exposed himself to gamma radiation which just furthered to strengthen him. He went dormant while the Savage Hulk persona ran the show for years. Then the Joe Fixit/Gray Hulk persona came out at night, while the Savage Hulk went dormant for a time, before returning. Then they were merged together until the Savage persona split away. Hulk-Prime returned following Onslaught and appears whenever he feels like it.

Kal-El was raised as Clark Kent. His persona was forged by Jonathan and Martha Kent, along with the information from the Sunstone crystals sent with him, containing the guidence from Jor-El, which shaped him into the hero that he is. In public, Clark Kent is seen as a mild manner reporter who tends to act spacy, from time to time. As Superman, Clark is using a variation of his true persona, only he is filled with confidence which everyone can sense and admire. He also makes enough of a shift in how he handles himself as Superman, so that no one can see the real him.

For a number of years, the persona that became Batman was the real deal and Bruce Wayne was a public disguise. This is largely true, but after the time he spent in Nanda Parbat, he has evolved past that. Bruce Wayne still has a public face as does Batman. But in private, he is both men. And he no longer obsesses over his parents death to the degree that he had.

Peter Parker gained confidence when he gained his powers and put on the suit. As Spider-Man, his flippant attitude was the result of his covering his true feelings of terror, due to his lack of experience. After a while, it became second nature to him. In public and private, Peter has much of the same attitude as he does as Spider-Man. Though every now and then he can have his confidence shaken.
