I voted other - my vote goes to Stephen R. Lawhead, an American writer of what is known as "Historical fiction". His writing has been very influential in my life. Followed closely by Geoffrey McSkimming, John Marsden, Kate Forsyth, Caiseal Mor and Isobelle Carmody, who are all Australian writers, so I doubt most of you would have heard of them.

Stephen King is very good. Grisham is good. Twain is without a doubt great. But I like Tolkien the most.

I can't say that I have one favorite author. Edith Wharton is among my favorites. Also Shakespeare, Homer (not Simpson! 8-}) as well as Stackpole, Allston and Zahn (although if he describes rain as oily again I'm gonna puke).

Some many books, so little time!

My favorite author is Ian Fleming who wrote all the James Bond novels.

I can't beleive nobody has mention Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson, H.G. Wells or Jules Vernes.

It's always challenging coming up with a short list in a category with so many good options as best/favorite author.

For what it's worth, I like Tolkien, but I don't think he is as good an author as some others. I feel his talent lies more in creating a world/myth. But his story-telling style leaves something to be desired.

Currently I am on a Neal Stephenson and Philip K. Dick kick. Reading Stephenson's latest, Quicksilver right now. Only a couple of chapters into it (got it for Christmas) but I have to say it already has potential for being at least as good as Cryptonomicon.
