    1. Many leaders on this list are isolationist. Maria Carolina was noted for her desire for extremely close relationships with other nations.

    2. Immigration is a major issue today. Maria Carolina was so sympathetic to the plight of refugees that she literally married one, and dedicated her life to their cause

    3. Maria Carolina had a clear-eyed view of the dangers of fear-mongering about the national debt and tried to combat radicalism on this front, just as hysterical people today are trying to use the "national debt" to shred the social safety net and must be combated.

    4. She was a major patron of the arts and believed in their importance.
