Who is your favorite fantasy author?

I tried to pick authors that were pretty well-known, and, based on their threads in SFF: Books and Comics, pretty popular.

It wa a tough choice for me, but in the end I had to choose Sara Douglass. She was one of the first fantasy authors I ever read a book by, and I still love her.

 

Tolkien, but only because I don't read much Sci-Fi

Tolkien wrote the Silmarillion, which I adore. However, for sheer yardage of output, jokes-per-minute quotient and ridiculous intelligence, it's got to go to Terry Pratchett.

 

Laurell K. Hamilton. Don't get me wrong, I love Tolkien's stuff, but Hamilton writes fantasy in a more personal way than Tolkien. LotR and Silmarillion seem so distant from what the characters feel and just focus on their actions, and I get bored of that eventually

Tollien. Not even close, even as much as I like the Potter books.

More surprising for someone my age is to not see Stephen R Donaldson as a choice, back in the day (late 70s early 80s, the Thomas Covenant trilogies ruled.

I was trying to do the more adult fantasy authors. Though I probably should have known better than to put Tolkien on; everyone love him . . .

 

Most definitely J.R.R. Tolkien!! Though I must say that I love C.S. Lewis, and J.K. Rowling as well, among several others.

George R. R. Martin without a doubt. Tolkein's books didn't do too much for me. The movies were drastically better.
